So what is the difference between Clown Shoes Pecan Pie Porter and Clown Shoes Genghis Pecan Pie Porter? Just that one uses extract and the other doesn't? Do they still brew both beers? Are they significantly different in taste? I have been eying this beer for Thanksgiving and just trying to find out the difference.
Pecan is a new recipe where they use real roasted pecans and aged a small part of it in bourbon barrels
I was very disappointed with the Genghis Pecan Pie last year, and I'm a Clown Shoes fan...I haven't seen the new Pecan Pie Porter yet
I wouldn't get your hopes up on this one. I have had both and they aren't that good. And I like Pecan pie
I tried the Pecan last night and I liked it. It's not really bourbon-y or pecan-y but it was tasty nonetheless.
I was really, really looking forward to this beer, so much I picked up a couple of bottles to sit on through the winter months. Have to say, I was somewhat disappointed, particularly with the lack of pecan/pecan pie flavors and spices, even as the beer warmed. I got more of the bourbon aging than anything else, followed by a good amount of nondescript sweetness. Now, I don't think it was a bad beer by any stretch - in fact, it was a pretty decent porter. But when you call something a Pecan Pie Porter, expectations are set for a good dose of those flavors. Sure, I'll drink the second bottle and maybe this beer will find me better the second time around, but right now it ranks up there with some of the biggest disappointments of the season just because it failed to deliver on the promise of its name, at least for me.
Haven't tried this year's yet, but remember enjoying Genghis Pecan last year. My favorite pecan beer is Pecan Dream from Holy City Brewing near Charleston. But alas, you can only get it there.
I should note there was a slight roasted nuttyness in the finish akin to those bags of cinnamon nuts you get at a state fair or something, but that seemed a result of the porter base rather than anything pecan pie.
