It's so nice outside, I can't help but think about Pilsners. I love em but am having trouble locating great ones; seems most I grab are either fairly bland or way too hoppy for the style. My favorite locals so far are Left Hand's, Twisted Pine's, and Odell's double pilsner (does that count?). I'm sure Prost's is great too, but I haven't tried it yet.

What are the best readily available Pilsners in Colorado? What about Kolsch?

I tried the Pateros Creek Old Towne Kolsch the other day. Unfortunately, the can (I assume) gave the beer a rubbery flavor and aroma that was no good, but without that problem the beer was very nice. Hopefully, it was just a issue with that one can and I liked what I was trying enough that I plan on giving it another shot.

Elevation's kolsch is also very good. Unfortunately, it isn't bottled as far as I am aware.

Not a pilsner fan, so can't really comment on those. I am sure you are aware of them but there's always Oskar Blues's Little Yellow Pils or Avery's pilsner (forget the name), or Great Divide's Nomad. Then there's the lagers...not sure what the difference between lagers and pilsners are to be honest....Ska's Mexican Lager, Upslopes Craft Lager or Fort Collins Brewery's 1900 Amber Lager.

Golden City makes (made) a nice Kolsch, but the brew master went to Fate. Maybe they'll make that watermelon kolsch. Oskar Blues has Mama's Little Yellow Pils, fairly malty. Prost brews Tivoli's recipe, and it's refreshing.

MillerCoors makes a beer with a great American pilsner taste...according to them :astonished:

Prost's is the best German pils from CO. It's the dry northern variety, pretty similar to Jever. Yellow Kite from Bristol would probably be second. It's their summer seasonal, so it's not always easy to find. Nomad isn't the most authentic one in the world (it's like a German/Czech hybrid), but I like it. Left Hand's is nice as well.
Backcountry's is supposed to be good, but I honestly haven't tried it.
If you dig pilsner, helles is it's maltier cousin. There are several good helles beers around. Tivoli from Prost, Copper Kettle's Bavarian Hells, Lone Tree's Mountain Mama.

    What I normally drink:
    Avery Joe's Pilsner
    Odell Double Pilsner
Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils
Prost Pilsner is decent too, but default to the above 3, in regards to German Pilsner, I still go Victory Prima Pils everytime.

    Other lagers:
    Elevation Kolsch
    Copper Kettle Helles Lager
Steamworks Colorado Kolsch (I know reviews are mixed, but I love it)

No love/mention of New Belgium Blue Paddle? It's a summertime favourite of mine.

Prost has the best pilsner. I really like it when they put on the occasional keller version of it.

This is great stuff guys! I completely forgot about Mama's and Joe's... can't believe I did that. I've never had Nomad so that's a must. I can't remember a single helles I've had, I'll definitely be seeking those out.

I really need to get out to Prost.

Up here in Fort Collin we get Prost's growlers, one of which is the their pilsner. Seems like they should be in Boulder too.

They are, I picked up the Oktoberfest (great) and the Alt (fantastic) but not the Pilsner yet. With all these growlers sitting around though, I think it's time I take a trip to the brewery to get them refilled.

I've recently gotten back into Mama's and happy about it. But...BUT...Tivoli Helles...holy god. That beer is single-handedly pushing me to build my kegerator just so I can have that beer pouring at my house always.

You know, after the Gratzer tasting, I wouldn't mind having quite a few growlers' worth of Caution Casper the Friendly Gratzer this summer. The Mahr's @Domingo brought was also a great option, even though it's coming all the way over from Germany.

Definitely loving the Tivoli when I'm in the mood for that style and Prost has it on.....

    Hey BA Folks!

Our 8 Second Kölsch is just hitting Denver for the first time this weekend, Would love to hear your opinions on it and get some reviews (we only have 2!).

    Its on tap at:

    Falling Rock (year round now)
    Fresh Craft (tapped today)
Amatos Ale House (rotating with our specialties)

We will have it on tap at a lot of the events we will be doing next week. Sorry for the shameless plug but we want to hear your opinion, and while it is brewed with a traditional Kölsch Ale yeast strain, we lager it for Four weeks so fits roughly into that craft lager style.

Cheers to great beer! (Our vote would be Avery's Joe's Pilsner FYI)
