I've used it several times. When I did an Amarillo heavy hopshot beer back when Amarillo hopshot was available, I noticed that the two syringe fills I added as a late addition did not dissolve fully and left a quarter sized goo mound on the kettle floor. Haven't seen any goo piles in beers when I've used hop extract early on. I'll make sure to eyeball the kettle the next time I brew ( using hopshot in an imperial red ale very soon).

Ward, maybe the hop extract dissolves better with 60 minutes of boil?

Please report back on your experiences with the Imperial Red.

    Cheers!

I used NB hop shots on a Pliny clone and I saw this when I added the extract to the boil and on the brew pot when I was cleaning up afterwards, was a little strange looking but the beer tasted great. Would definitely use them again for the bittering addition, helps cut down on all that hop matter left over from the boil, yea I go commando:grinning:

    Interesting.

I found a small scorch spot on the bottom of my kettle, but I don't think it was from the extract, as I did a 90 min boil, and added at 60 min. My 400 micron SS hop spider dropped down farther and I think it was getting packed up with the 10 ounces of pellets and trapped some wort under the screen for a little while until I pulled it up.

That was the first thing I was worried using the extract, but it melted almost instantly when I held the foil in the boil and let it dilute and slide off.

Shaun Hill is also cheating under that definition. In fact, I'm willing to bet there are a ton more brewers using hop extract than we realize.

So if lagunitas, russian river , the alchemist , and hill farmstead use it, then by my logic it's got some merit in the brew house.

A friend and I mad a Pliny the Younger clone in December using a large amount of co2 hop extract. It was very much like the BP oil accident in the gulf...there were hop resin globs on everything. All tools and kettles had to boiled with fresh water to get the resins to release. We had all but sworn off using it again....until we tasted the beer...holy crap is it good! We poured it at a beer festival and it was a hit. There were a couple of people originally from Cali that said it was very close to the real PTY.

Man, color me lucky I didn't have an issue with the stuff sticking to everything that it touched.

I got it on my hands a bit and it was a bitch to get off, hot, hot water, some soap and a hard wipe with a paper towel did the trick.

    I'd look on ebay.

My wife is a RN, so we had a bunch laying around. Check a medical supply store, or even your local pharmacy, they will sell them.

Using some extract again today. Doing a huge and hoppy DIPA. Going for dry and nothing sweet about it.

Using 10mL in a 90 min boil, for a 5.5 gallons batch. Will yield me around 110 IBU's from the extract addition. I need it because of the 9.5 ounces I'm adding at 5 minutes through 30min whirlpool.

I just got my tin tonight and transferred into syringes. Here is how to do it:

Throw that can into a crock-pot with some water. Make sure to add the water about an hour a head of time on high. I did lose a few drops from the lid...as you can see above.

You should really get a needle for the syringes, but I didn't have one on hand, so you can see I have a few small bubbles in there...basically impossible to get out with this thick syrup. I figure that the can had a huge amount of headspace (literally 80% of the can is empty) that the bubbles won't matter too much.

    Anyway, that's 15 syringes filled to 10ml.

I got 100ct syringes for $21 on Amazon.

EDIT: I've been able to remove the bubbles by letting the syringes stand on end for about 10 min. Difficult to do when you're filling them all up!

hold the syringe upright and flick it, the bubbles will goto the top and you should be able to squeeze the air and only the air out....

I'm aware of that...just doesn't work with this thick of a medium.

Even heated up it has the viscosity of cold motor oil.

Breaking Bad makes home brewing look more and more like making drugs, but damn this doesn't help!

I've used hop extract one when I was an extract brewer and it really upped my IBU's for me.

Believe it or not I used a self prepared 5ml hopshot syringe (the only hop addition) in 24 gallons of lambic wort today! I use a plate chiller and adding a hopshot just seemed easier than bagging up an ounce of pellets and tossing them into the boil kettle. I wasn't about to waste a muslin bag for adding that small of an amount of hops to the boil.
