Apparently Coattails Winery of Newberg, OR is now brewing beer.

From the Coattails Wine and Beer Instagram account, dated December 12, 2023:
We would like to share some exciting news with you all! Our new brewery buildout at the Etzel Farm is finished and the first batch is coming soon. Yes you heard that right , we are diversifying your pallets beyond wine to include all your favorite beer styles, from old world German style lagers to hoppy (but balanced) IPA’s and everything in between . Sorry no Brett beers! The plan is to start hosting guests by appintment for tastings of our wine and beer in a carefully curated approach. Stay tuned as we share updates with the new beer project.

I found this out because Wildwood Taphouse in Hillsboro has Coattails Helles Lager on tap right now, and I'd never heard of "Coattails Brewery" before.

Interesting. I've only ever had their Horsetail Pinot Noir, which was a very well made wine sold at a pretty reasonable price. I wonder what prompted this move. The brothers/partners are sons of Michael Etzel, who is a very big deal in the Willamette Valley wine world (he's the GUY at Beaux Freres, a very highly regarded winery). To the best of my knowledge, I don't think the brothers have any sort of beer experience.

Call me a snob, but I’m suspicious of any winery or brewery that can’t spell palate.

Nobody ever budgets for proofreaders. And it shows.

I did chuckle at the "Sorry no Brett beers!" comment.

As a professional proofreader, this is sadly unsurprising.

They're diversifying the pallets of the distributors who take their libations off the property to the retailers

As a professional graphic designer/art director with a brief history in the financial printing industry, I have been grateful for every single proofreader I have ever worked with.

If I ever get the chance to meet you in a place where beer is available, I hope you will let me buy you a beer.

Likewise, I work with a number of graphic designers and absolutely appreciate the tremendous value they add to any project. Some of them just can’t spell for shit
