Cocoa Nibs & Vanilla: Mash? Boil? Both?

    I was going to add vanillla to a stout of mine but decided not to. I put the cut and scraped vanilla beans into a mason jar of Buffalo Trace Bourbon. The paste part of the bean started to look funny and had an off-white color. Even though it is highly unlikely that anything grew in the alcohol, I didn't really care for the smell or aroma I was getting. I threw the whole tincture out, and my stout turned out fantastic.
    Bottom Line: Give something a try, but don't be afraid to audible if you don't think it is what you were going for.
