Coffee Beer Popularity

    You must have a really great palate because I can't detect the staleness in coffee beers even though I am aware that it's there. The malts and hops seems to hide this fact really well and if the malts and hops don't hide this then it's not a good coffee beer. As for why are coffee beers rated so high.... I think it's kind of "geek thing". People are starting to really cozy up to coffee beers and as a result, you get very high rated ones on websites like ba.com and rb.com.

    There are some coffee infused beers that I think are outstanding but it's really hard to beat that natural coffee taste you get from the malts only. Like for example.. Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout has one of the greatest coffee flavors you can get in a beer from just the malts only. If you shop around, you can find some really great "coffee beers" that don't actually have coffee in them...

    Yeah, one other thing, why do you think roast level should be minimal? Some of the best coffees I've ever had were dark roasted coffees.

    I agree to an extent. I agree with everything you said about coffee, but I do think that some coffee beers actually do have a good coffee flavor. Most (overwhelmingly) do tasy stale and sometimes quite offensive, but occasionally it actually works (tree house good morning, big bad baptist, etc). The best coffee beer I have had was of course with actual fresh coffee beans... DFH Indian brown randalled with coffee beans from Diesel cafe in Boston at the EBF pre-fest Throwdown. That really is the only way to completely avoid staleness

    Minimal for that bean, sometimes that means dark. Indonesian and South American Coffees are often roasted dark, lighter is ok when really getting to know the bean, but darker kills the bean.

    I like the coffee flavours you can get from malts more than when coffee is added as well. You get more of the coffee acidity that way, not just the bitterness and "used coffee grounds" character.

    Probably already stated but the reason coffee stouts are good for the beer drinkers is because we're not Coffee perfectionist like you seem to be. I think they taste amazing and have no taste of stale flavors. These may not pass by devout coffee drinkers, so it's a good thing we're all beer drinkers!

    I just had a discussion about this with my wife over some beer sample paddles yesterday. I do enjoy coffee stouts, but I really struggle to rate them as high as most here, and I attribute that to being fairly picky when it comes to my home brewed coffee. I enjoy coffee and chocolate on the same level when they play a secondary or tertiary role and allow the base beer bask in the glory of being the lead.
