Anyone have any experience doing a coffee IPA? I'm currently trying to formulate a recipe for one but looking for any input...did a search but it kept coming up with stouts...I don't use the forum often so please don't judge.

    Cheers

This could get deleted as a "let me google that for you" type post, but try entering this in google...

    coffee IPA -stout

The minus sign before stout will tend to repel the results you don't want.
Personally, I think the idea of a coffee IPA sounds horrible. But I've never actually tasted one.

I tried a couple VikeMan and one was good while the other was meh. I guess it depends on the type of beans and the how they pair with the hops chosen.

Best homebrew one I've tried had the coffee brewed by cold extraction (like a Toddy cold brew) and then add to taste at kegging or bottling.

I've only had two - one homebrewed and one at a beer festival - and both were fantastic. It's all about buying the right coffee beans. You want something bright and fruity. The homebrewed version was "dry-beaned" in secondary.

Same here. I'd try it, but it sounds like clashing flavors. I wouldn't make one until I tried someone else's tho.

I've had one that was blah... hops and coffee cancelled each other out. But I could see some very fruity/winy African beans working with the right hops (Calypso, Sorachi Ace?). Even if it was great, the shelf life would likely be very short... drink up in 3-4 weeks.

I'm interested in this as well. I was just at breaker brewing last weekend in Wilkes Barre pa and they have a coffee ipa that is really awesome. I'm going to have to pick there brains next time I go down there.

I did a blonde milk stout a couple months back and was shocked how fast the roast and coffee flavors dropped off. It was fairly roasty, fruity and chocolatey at first (nibs in primary, dry beaned in keg and beans at flameout; for the latter I wanted some bitterness), but now two months out, its an overly sweet, chewy blonde beer (e.g. its gross).

As a "non-biased" metric for the beers' current cloyingness, when entered in a comp in January it scored a 41 and placed second in its category, but when entered in a comp a couple weeks ago it scored 15 (I had bottles sitting around that I hadn't taste tested). Good times.
