Since I have never heard or read any comments about this, I was just wondering if coffee stouts, where coffee, espresso, and other such additives were present in the beer, actually had a caffeine content. A second and related question: Could such a beer have similar effects on people who are affected by caffeine. For example, my own rule of thumb about caffeine is that if I have it before 4:00 PM in the afternoon, I am generally safe. But if I have caffeine after 4:00 PM - say a cup of coffee with dinner - it will often keep me up at night. I was just wondering if coffee stouts ever had this effect on people. Grateful for the feedback.

You should be fine. This is a topic that has come up in this forum many times over the last year. There is caffeine in the espresso/coffee, however it usually is not enough to affect the body. I have a no caffeine diet and usually if I have some form of caffeine it greatly affects me. And I had a Founders Breakfast Stout and Stone Imperial Stout last night before bed and I slept like a baby.

For me, alcohol is a stronger depressant than caffeine is a stimulant.

Most likely trace amounts of caffeine brewed with coffee, but nothing too crazy as it's illegal to sell alcohol and caffeine infused beverages (ie. 4loko) and beers like FBS/KBS and BCBCS are still around.

Yes, there is a presence of caffeine in coffee stouts. How much? I don't know, but I know legally in the United States there is a limit on the caffeine that can be allowed in alcoholic drinks. Personally I can drink a cup of coffee before bed and sleep fine. I have never noticed the effects of caffeine in any stouts ive drank.

The FDA/TTB recent regulations against adding caffeine to alcoholic beverages did not prohibit the use of coffee as a flavoring, as noted by the FDA at the time:

Personally, I only day drink coffee stouts for this very reason.

Thanks. I wonder if the alcohol in the beer counteracts the caffeine though. In other words, I wonder if it was the alcohol that allowed you to sleep like a baby, thus mitigating the effects of the increased caffeine content from the coffee present.

Good point. But did you go this route because you have had an experience in the past where a coffee stout did keep you up?

I had a Terrapin Wake n Bake a few nights ago and couldn't go to sleep...Jittery Joe's must be some high octane stuff because the alcohol did NOT counteract the caffeine.

I'm as sensitive to caffeine as anyone, I don't touch the stuff due to an irregular heartbeat. I've never even given it a thought when drinking a Coffee Stout, never has any after effects at all except the alcohol from drinking a BCBCS bomber by myself.

Believe this to be physiologically correct. The depressing aspects of the alcohol outweigh any stimulation due to the caffeine. And it tastes good

I've wondered that, too, even though I don't ever recall being "kept up" by a coffee stout or the like.

Although, if you can drink a cup of coffee before bed and go to sleep, you're probably not the best judge of the effects of caffeine in alcohol :stuck_out_tongue: lol.

Me, on the other hand... Coffee'll definitely help wake me up in the morning, and it also interferes with me falling asleep if I have any too close to bedtime.

I have a high caffeine tolerance and never noticed an effect with coffee stouts...until last year. I cracked a Pipeworks Hyper Dog before watching Sportscenter (10pm) one night and found myself still frantically channel surfing at 1:45am.

I will second how string wake and bake is. I had a growler of it last year in about an hour and got no buzz but a huge buzz at the same time. It's like espresso in ur beer.

So I'm a sucker for stouts and coffee. Which stout has the most pronounced coffee flavor? I mean a stout that if you didn't know better was a cup'o'joe mixed with a stout.
