Ha, I just posted the other day that if there was one beer I could bring out of retirement that would be it. Never had it though.

Whatever it was, I thought it was one dimensional in flavor - the coffee flavor and the beer itself.

Great thread. Dark horse perkulator is an amazing coffee beer, also local option morning wood is fantastic. As for intense coffee I think of bells java for some reason

I've never actually had Bells Java Stout, which bums me out because I've had so many opportunities to try it. Soon.

Glad you said this. I had Victory at Sea not long ago and I was stunned at how heavy the coffee flavor was. It was like FBS x10.

Answer is a blend of Kona and Sumatra, as OP already said. As to the roaster, clearly nobody knows, as this thread has deteriorated into "your favorite coffee stout."

Catchyname, if you ever figure out the answer to the roaster, I'd love to know - thanks.

They use organic kona and sumatra but not sure on a specific roaster

W n B is what was formerly known as Wake and Bake... Dpeth Charge was a collab brew with, I believe, Left Hand that is retired.... not being a dick or anything, just clarifying

Had a Java Stout last night and it's not as coffee forward as you'd expect. Super tasty though...lots of vanilla and toffee notes.

Bahaha, I like how this went from a couple "since I don't know the answer" comments to a full-fledged separate discussion.

I have a feeling that Founders is buying the beans from a supplier above the retail level, but that's just a gut feeling. I would imagine if they were getting it from a local roaster they'd happily tell you if asked.

I had misread. I thought someone was saying Wake n Bake isn't brewed anymore. haha.

Morning Bell. Great Coffee forward beer with a great lactose balance.

Williamsburg Aleworks' Cafe Royale is a tremendously good coffee brew.

Since when does "coffee forward" equate to a good beer? If the coffee dominates I'd consider a beer to be completely unbalanced. Actually Peche Mortel should be on the "extremely well-balanced" list (as well as FBS and some others mentioned in this thread). The coffee is integrated and emphasizes qualities of the base beer.

If you want iced coffee, go to Starbucks.

I know we have some truck chasers on this site. How about one of the truck chasers sits outside Founders and waits for delivery trucks to bring in the beer making components for once instead of chasing the stuff that comes out of the other side of the brew kettle?

If you only see Sysco and other big suppliers coming in and out, you might be able to deduce from their catalog(s) what is actually going into it. If you see "Lindo Coffee Incorporated" or some such, you just hit the jackpot.

    Beer espionage. It's intriguing!

Actually....this would be a better first stab, come to think of it.

I'm drinking this now and it effing awesome! I picked it out solely based on the low price tag and was definitely surprised. Since it appears I can get it fairly cheap near me, I'm more than willing to share the wealth if anyone is looking to get their hands on it in a trade.

Know this is kinda an old thread but I thought I would add some direction for future people who stumble into this like me. If you read this story http://allaboutbeer.com/founders-breakfast-stout/ founder dave engbers talks about chocolate covered espresso beans being the inspiration for the beer. Someone earlier mentioned ferris coffee roasters in Grand Rapids who carries both sumatran and kona as well as chocolate covered beans. Also grand rapids coffee roasters also carry the chocolate covered beans and sumatran coffee but no Kona. The only other place that might make sense is Magnum Coffee and I only bring this company up because they would have no problem giving them the volume Founders would need. I would say that it is almost absolutely a local grand rapids company and ferris would probably be your best bet because they appear to have the best quality beans. Bottom line though is the best part of this recipe is to play with the coffee flavors that you prefer. Ive brewed it 5 different ways and loved them all.
