I just found out about this brewery. I was searching for a brewery in NH/MA that will be on my way home to RI, and this one is my choice. I was gonna go to Wormtown until I found out about this place, thanks to BA! I cant wait to taste their brews- they have some really good sounding ones. Couple of juicy IPAs, a rye IPA, IIPA, a really flavorful sounding PA, and a few others. Anyone care to chime in with their favorite Cold Harbor brews, or perhaps anything i might want to know about Cold Harbor?
You could hit both Wormtown and Cold Harbor pretty easily, they're about 15-20 minutes apart Cold Harbor is around the back of it's location, so trust your GPS and pull in, you can't see it from the road There's some more about Cold Harbor here http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/other-ma-breweries.387623/page-2 My first visit was last Sunday based on a rec in that thread, I'd just been buying growlers at Julio's, they're definitely worth their own stop. And of course if you have a few minutes hit Julio's too
ah, thanks very much. knowing me, i might have gotten confused. you know, i was thinking about going to both. i still might. but those Cold Harbor brews just sound more my style. i might want to spend every available beer-dollar i have on them. plus it kinda stings how MA law makes me buy each brewery i go to's growler. at least they dont have the stupid 72oz rule like RI. would you personally consider Wormtown's brews as good as Cold Harbor's? or vice versa? i focus primarily on hop forward brews, but dig just about everything.
I'm a big Wormtown guy, they're fantastic. I'd say as far as the IPAs go, Wormtown makes great West Coast style (Be Hoppy and right now Hopulence), Cold Harbor goes for the hazy new school NE aka 'Vermont' style. So whichever you prefer would be the way to go if you can only do one. Cold Harbor also does a great job with their British beers - the Bitters are great. Wormtown nails everything they do, the Pils is great, the APA is great etc...
I have been reading on these threads a lot about this Brewery too. I was planning to go to Wormtown today with wife and 10 month old, anyone know if Cold Harbor would be a ok place to bring my well behaved (as can be) 10 month old? Funny that I ran into this thread as was going to post a question of Wormtown or Cold Harbor?
Smallish tasting room is very kid friendly. Wormtown has a better setup but Cold Harbor worth a look.
I've brought my kid to Cold Harbor before - granted just to fill up growlers and not hang out. Shouldn't be a problem.
Cold Harbor was great! Brought the baby, and three others showed up. Not a problem. More importantly, the beer was great! Ended up doing a bunch of 4oz tasters, and settled on a growler of Willow Tree DIPA. Have to say, the coffee oatmeal stout was also phenomenal. Had a classic hazy IPA which was all juice notes, also tasty. Anyways, good times, nice guys, great beers, and surprisingly not slammed on a Saturday early afternoon.
Cold Harbor is a great find. I've taken home 2 growlers, both which were excellent. You can sample or buy a pint in their smallish tasting room. Friendly folks.
Agreed Cold Harbor is making some excellent beers. Indie Summer, Sun Spray, and Sister Summer all solid "NE Style" IPAs.
I was huge on Ameno's Mustache when I was there on Sunday. Bought a growler of Indie to share with a buddy, but Armeno's was the clear winner for me...just perfect. I think all the juice IPAs from Cold Harbor show a lot of promise, but need refinement.
They also have some small batch cask beers that they release every couple of weeks, which is a great option to have. Agreed that the IPAs could use some refinement, but for only being open since September, I have a feeling they'll start to dial them in a little more. Big things popping at Cold Harbor already, can't wait to see where they go!
The place is nice. The beer...not so much. Thai takeout was an odd savory beer. Not bad but confusing. The IPAs were wannabes. Yeasty, murky brown, no nose, honestly gross. Felt like there was an outside preaence contributing towards the haze. The DIPA was good.(They made a standard DIPA) the coffee porter was good as well. Not a place I'm going to go again for a while. Give them some time to figure out wtf they are because they dont know.
I stopped in yesterday and wasn't impressed by anything. They have potential but their stuff needs some work
Swung by Cold Harbor yesterday and tried Indian Summer IPA. Definitely trying to push that whole "juice" factor, I thought it was OK but not in the same realm as other options here in Massachusetts. I'd love to try some more of their offerings down the road. Parking was a nightmare - I highly recommend carpooling for anyone contemplating a visit. Anyone know what's up with their pouring pints through the growler filling tubes and just leaving them hanging off the taps? Kind of gross. Pint pours into plastic pint cups also seemed a little weird for a tap room - where's the glassware?
