Wasn't sure if i should have put this here or in the cellaring subforum, but. As i'm running out of room at my parents (their basement is a constant 60 degrees or lower all year round, and going back and forth to my parents is becoming too costly when I want to trade/drink certain stuff. I've been looking into a storage unit to act as a 'cellar'.

I went to look at a few, and none seem to be below 70 degrees. Does someone have a recommended storage company, or a different idea? The best i've found was a place in LIC for about $40 a month for more than enough room for me. No place I looked at last week had an electric outlet in the unit, otherwise it wouldn't matter because i could just get a fridge to keep everything in. Also looked into a refrigerated storage unit, but it's thousands of dollars a month because it's more industrial.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

How many bottles are we talkin? Would a temp controlled cold storage box/ wine cooler typed deal be too small?

I'm not in your area, but have you tried contacting wine storage companies? They should be climate controlled, allow small quantities, and maybe they would also store beer.

In the 250-350 range. a wine cooler is too smaller, or too expensive for the size i have. and in regards to the wine storage company, they're too expensive. they tend to charge per case (which makes sense) but both places i looked up charge to take your inventory out for you, which would kill me if i make 3-4 trades a month, to be charged just to get something out of 'storage'

If you live in an apartment I suggest you cut back on trading until you can afford whichever option you have available to you that meets all the criteria of being near enough, cool enough, large enough and inexpensive enough for you to afford. I know that's not much help and is not what you are hoping to hear, but it is a thought I wish someone would have given me back in the day when I traded like crazy and put wayyyyy too many bottles into my cellar. Many declined in quality instead of improving despite my year around cool cellar. I only keep <200 bottles now and make sure to drink them on the regular

And as another thought it occurs to me I have a friend who was/is like you, he left behind about 800 bottles at his mom's house, got an apartment and moved some in to temp control, left the rest, now has a house but has gotten so many more bottles in the interim he can barely move them in and has left a lot in his mom's cellar. I cringe knowing the thousands of dollars of undrinkable once-greatness that is in his mom's house right now.

I guess also helpful to know what your apartment/house situation is - are you living solo in a 1500 sq ft three bedroom duplex in a large apt building with storage, or are you making a one bed on a 3rd floor walk up work, despite having two kids and a dog.

Sounds like you're in the city and your parents are out in NJ/LI/Westchester/etc?

And what sort of quantity are we talking? 50 bottles? 500?

For such a large cellar, it sounds like any type of storage is out of the question. Even a large temp controlled wine cellar doesn't hold that many bottles. Do you have any friends in the restaurant biz that would rent you some space in a walk-in? Maybe you've stumbled upon a new crazy start idea:stuck_out_tongue:

There are plenty of wine storage units that fit that many or more, especially considering beer bottles are smaller than wine bottles. Main issue is probably that they are geared towards storing bottles sideways which isn't ideal. You would lose a lot of space storing upright. Also the OP has shot down a number of ideas as too expensive, but hasn't given a price range, which would help.

I have a full sized wine cooler, that's listed with a capacity of 153 bottles (laying down that is) and I had to retrofit it with some flat shelves to be able to stand bottles up. Even so, id say 350 bottles might be pushing it, as weight starts to become an issue. I was able to get the cooler off someone giving it away, so price wasn't an issue aside from running a wine cooler all year long. They sell for about $1,500 without even factoring electricity or where/ how you would even fit one in a New York City apartment.

Im a teacher, so spending thousands on a cooler/fridge is not something income allows me to do.

RE apartment size, teacher living in Manhattan, i barely have room for a bed... haha.

Ideally a storage unit like Cubesmart/Public storage is ideal, as i can fit the 19 cases I have into a 5x5x4 unit for $40 a month. Spending $100+ a month is/would be difficult unless I split it with someone (i do have someone i could split with) if the size of the unit was large enough.

I have bartender friends, but their bosses, eh, wouldnt go for such a thing as they wouldnt/dont want the liability.

Finding one of those units for super cheap (cooler/fridge) would be great, but i find all people in the city hustle and wont happen. Maybe on Long Island where my parents are, but it doesnt eliminate the idea of not having to commute 90 min each way on public transit to get 2 beers i might have agreed to trade and vice versa.

But u can afford a storage unit to cellar 250-350 bottles and then to trade/ship? I take it you are not a math teacher? This is one of the weirder threads out there. Maybe get your parents in on the shipping game and throw them a few beers for their troubles.

Convert a chest freezer with an extended collar ala keezer style and add shelves? I don't see how holding onto that many bottles does anyone any good, trading or drinking wise regardless.

Yeah. I actually stopped trading a lot and have mostly downsized from 400 bottles because i couldnt afford it. And yes, the $480 for a whole year of a storage unit (locker size) versus $1200 is a big diff. This is not a weird question. How often do you hear people say 'properly cellared'? I wanna keep downsizing but keep the long-term stuff better then my current situation.

I assume you don't want to move out to Queens or Brooklyn? Probably not worth it just for beer, but that extra space probably would allow you some additional storage options inside of your apartment.

If you mean move where i live, it's in the cards, but my lease isn't up for another 16 months or so. been where i am for over 2. having a storage place in the outer boro's is fine tho (bk/queens). the storage unit i found is actually in LIC, right near LIC beer project, so i can kill two birds one stone.

But maybe i didn't hit it home good enough. in NYC, unless you're running your a/c 24/7 during the summer, the 80-96 degree interior temperature just isn't good. so as many people do (keep their beer in a closet in a box, or in a kitchen cabinet), let's be serious, that's not the 'proper' way to cellar, so i want to try to keep that hot air during the summer to a minimum to not speed up the aging process of my beer.
