I kept hearing lukewarm reviews of the Deschutes/HotD Collage No. 1 when it came out, so I waited to drink mine until after the best after date (4-30-13). Never had a fresh one to compare it to but that mofo is pretty tasty to me right now. Anyone else think it was worth the wait?

I find it completely incomprehensible that this beer improved. It was irredeemably abysmal when it came out.

I'm typically a pretty big Deschutes fanboy, but I'm going to have to agree. Not a big fan of Collage 1, which is unfortunate since I bought 6 bottles :slight_frown:

That's just, like, your opinion man. (And 4.17 rAvg disagrees with you.)

FWIW, the most common complaint I heard about Collage around when it was released was that it tasted too much like Dissident, which doesn't seem like much of a criticism to me, although I can see that some people might have wanted it to taste more like Adam or Fred.

I don't really get why you responded to me with this. No shit it's my opinion, what else would it be? That beer was the worst beer I tried in 2012, and I find it baffling that other people like it. How is that anything other than just my opinion?

I heard that too, but I feel like I can taste the different beers' influences pretty well. Maybe that came out more with age, I dunno.

I have one put up but I have no idea when I will get around to drink it. It had no where to go but up, it isn't possible to get any worse than it was fresh.

I had a bottle of Collage fresh and reviewed it then. Yeah it had a lot going on, but I enjoyed it. I have a bottle sitting in the fridge just waiting to be popped when the next cold spring night occurs. Will report back when I crack it.

I liked it fresh as well. It def had a lot going on though, I am interested to see how this turns out after some age. I have a few bottles of it... one day I will crack another.

I opened a best after 4/30/13 bottle a couple weeks back and thought it was a boozy disjointed mess that easily needs at least another year on it to pull together. The heat from the HOTD was not playing well with the sour from the Deschutes at all.

We just tried another bottle. Tasted like vinegary raisins and prunes. The red wine characteristics of the Dissident really don't mesh well with the malty mess that is HotD's beers. Really can't get behind this beer, and I have no idea why people are rating it so high. I truly think people are rating based upon expectation rather than reality.

FT: 4 bottles of Collage No. 1

Haters, it's just beer. You win some, you lose some. I thought it was still really young fresh and has improved since then. More time may mean even better improvement. That's why we do this whole beer aging thing.

I can see where you get vinegar flavor....to each their own. I personally loved it. The sour notes mixed with bourbon and other barrel notes is just a really interesting mix that I found very appealing. Maybe I'll have to keep you in mind when I come off of my trading hiatus.

Opened one last August and another a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was nowhere near the same beer. I agree that fresh it was pretty sloppy, but a couple of months really helped clean it up. Granted, I will probably wait another 6 months or so before opening another bottle. But at the way things are going that will definitely be a good thing

I had my single bottle a couple weeks ago. If I hadn't promised myself I'd only have one beer that night, I wouldn't have finished it.
