I went to the fridge last night for a beer and noticed that one of my cans of Lagunitas 12th of Never was partially collapsed. I thought maybe it opened somehow and leaked but I checked it out and it is sealed. Has anyone ever seen this or have any idea what would cause it? I plan to open it tonight and see if it smells/tastes OK.
Was it solid when you put it in? I'm having a hard time trying think of reason it would happen, once it was past the canning process. Weird.
I'm pretty sure it was solid when I put it in the fridge because I didn't notice anything. Though I bought them not cold so maybe it wasn't full but the can seemed normal till the cold collapsed it. Pretty bizarre.
This sounds to me like it was a can that was not full from the brewery, but when chilled, the air space in the can contracted and the can's walls were pulled inward.
I agree that it would be a low fill. Got that excessive headspace to play around in. Must've been on a case edge of a pallet that had to sit out in the sun for a bit awaiting transit. That heat spike got the Co2 out of solution and when it cooled down again, they went back in to solution which imploded the can.
The few collapsed cans I've come across were due to a slow leak or low fill. All were part of a six pack and were returned for credit
Good, that's the way it should come out since beer doesn't spoil. It simply gets old or develops an off flavor if it isn't propertly protected from microorganisms during brewing that can give it an off flavor (but are not harmful to humans). Did the amount of the pour appear to be the same as the others you've poured from regular looking cans?
I bought a case of lost nation gose that were all collapsed after a couple days in the fridge. ...also flat too.
Haha this is all due to Tony Magee in past opining about the dangers of aluminum, and how he'd never put his beer in aluminum cans IIRC. He is right about aluminum, the path from bauxite mine to aluminum can is a poisonous one, but he def deserves good natured ribbing on this
