I am a 21 year old college student at Temple University. If you are like me, you have become disgusted by the taste of Natural Light/Ice, Rolling Rock and even the occasional Keystone (gross!). I have been trying to find a way to balance drinking a higher quality beer while still adhering to my college student budget. I created this thread to find others who are similar to me, with your suggestions of beers along with my own.

I have found that Tröegs Hopbacker is a good tasting, somewhat cheaper beer. It's not out of this world crazy good, but it has a solid hoppy flavor and great after taste for around $30-35.

No help to you but michelob golden Draft light was the college choice in this neck of the wood equally as bad as the one you listed. Good luck on your quest.

If by chance you have Zywiec Baltic Porter available to you, it's crazy cheap, crazy good, and has a high abv as well.

Sierra Nevada all day, man. Not sure about PA, but six packs are as cheap as $6 bucks in NM. Although, does PA required you only buy beer by the case? A case of Sierra should be cheap.

Do you get Narragansett in your area? Not half bad and pretty cheap. Their Bohemian Pils is very good, but another member here that is also in PA told me he hasn't seen it where he is.

Oh, I just read you're looking for something more hoppy. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale shouldn't be too expensive in your area....

You live in PA, I would imagine the best decent college budget beer would be yuengling.

If I was in a tight situation where drinking was still an important aspect of life (ala college) I would purchase something that gave me a good bang for my buck and then something cheap but not awful to go to afterwards. For less than 30-35 dollars you could get a six pack of Sierra Nevada Torpedo and a 12 pack of Gennese Cream Ale. Or any reasonable higher gravity bomber and any better than BMC local cheap option (Yuengling, gennese or what have you)

When i was in college I used to splurge and get Miller Lite/Coors Light when i was sick of Keystone. You can usually get a case for about 13 bucks....................I mean who's playing beer pong with Sierra Nevada? Treat yourself to a real beer every once and awhile no need to binge drink IPA's

New Belgium Rampant is your friend. Also, as said in previous posts, Narragansett and Gennessee cream ale are both decent for the price.

How can you be going to school at Temple and not mention Yuengling?? Philly gets Narragansett, try the Cream Ale.

Lagunitas Hop Stoopid Bombers are cheap, great tasting and sold in PA. At twice the ABV too of some of the beers you mentioned and being 22oz, its like getting 4 beers in one.

I'm 24, graduated in 2012. when I was in your situation, I would either grab a few bombers or some singles and start with those then go on to drinking yuengling or Lions Head, just like what @Rekrule said. Canned lager was nice because you could throw it in your backpack and be on your way. But to be honest, drinking all that crap when I was a bit younger made me appreciate the options I have now. That doesn't mean that you should keep on drinking piss. No one deserves that!

I agree with the above posts about Yuengling. It was a solid transition beer for me, and I still enjoy it from time to time. Definitely try less expensive offerings from the craft world (like SN and Troegs) from time to time, but Yuengling is a great cheap beer for drinking at parties and whatnot. Also, I spent my first year of college at Temple and miss it quite a bit. If you come across Jerry the Hobo, please let him know that he still owes me 5 bucks!

Most of Sam Adam's offerings are cheap and taste a lot better than BMC. I know their Rebal IPA down here is $6.99/ 6 pack.

    FYI, it's Genesee - pronounced jen-uh-SEE.

Those of us from western New York who've known it all our lives certainly don't consider it better than any other BMC beers. Cheaper yes, but the OP is looking for beer that is significantly better.

I remember people calling Natural Light "Natty Light". Is this still the case?
