Great thread, thanks for everyone replying. I have gathered a lot from this, and it seems like the general consensus is Yuengling. Yuengling has not really been something I enjoy, however, I actually was drinking some on Sunday and it was bearable. This weekend when I was in Lancaster, I tried Hopnosh IPA for 35/case. 7.3%, it took myself and my friend an entire day of drinking (with 6 left over for the next day) to finish it. We also were giving out a few to friends. This was a great value, it was an easy beer to drink with very good flavor. If you are an occasional beer drinker, or a non-binge drinker who likes these kind of IPAs, this beer is a great buy.

You can buy cases directly from Philadelphia Brewing Co., I forget how much, but they're cheap. Under $30 pretty sure.

Plus you can have a few free ones while you're there.

I feel your pain. I'm a college student at Florida. Sierra Nevada 12 packs offer great bang for the buck and I would also explore buying large growlers at local brewaries. I just started making my own beer with is also a cheap ish option.

This may not be what you’re after, but homebrewing may be an option for you. You can make very high quality beer for pennies vs. name brands. Another option may me Kirkland beer at Costco. Either option is certainly better than anything put out by BMC.

SNPA. It's canned and it's not too expensive. A favorite of mine as a current student who sometimes gets in beer binds due to time constraints...

this issn't entirely true. sixers of the craft available in the mid-90's were comparable, if not cheaper, in price than BMC because a)nobody wanted to take a chance on a dark beer and b) craft beer was fighting for shelf space. of course, you weren't going to find any craft beer that was cheaper than the $9.99 case of natty stubbies. But, i can remember seeing six packs of goose island with a lower price point then a sixer of bud light at least in indiana  i used to rock the Rogue 22 oz at parties thinking i was THE MAN!

Yuengling all the way if they have it by you. It's the best adjunct lager money can buy, and wicked cheap

In college I was drinking 40s of Bud as a freshman, then moved onto oil cans of Elephant Red sophomore year, then Rolling Rock junior year, then sierra Nevada by Senior year.

Their Porter is actually pretty solid, as is the bock.

SBC is in Pittston which is a solid hour and a half from NY.

Their Goldencold Lager is really underrated. Their owner is ALL about making sessionable beers so everything they make is pretty mild but still flavorful.

    Homebrew is a good option.
Even cheaper is just making Apfelwein. Look it up on Homebrewtalk. No boiling etc, required. Works out to about $3.50/sixer (14/case) and at 8+ ABV will rock your world. Plus it tastes great.

Sorry, but that's not the way it works. You finish school, you spend months or years trying to find a job, then when you finally get it, you realize that the pay sucks when stacked against all of your bills.

Interesting to hear about the police watch a state border. I didn't realize that it was illegal to purchase in DE and bring it home with you. What exactly are the rules there - is that a state law? Does it have something to do with quantity?

Back in college it was Natty Light all they way, payday for me would be a six-pack of Redhook ESB, but after my six-pack was done, Natty Light. At the University of California, craft beer was not much of an option.

    This.
I hate to bang the Costco drum again, but their Fresh Pressed apple juice has one ingredient listed: 100% apple juice. Online list price is $9.76 for two gallons. They also carry an organic version for a couple of bucks more. You can use regular table sugar to boost the ABV, or dark brown sugar to boost ABV and give it some residual sweetness (not much). Also, use cider yeast.

I must have missed the lesson that said we should buy cheap beer while in college.

Life's short, buy good beer, work while going to school and enjoy. I would never consider putting Natty Ice, Bud Light or the others anywhere near my intestines. Never had Yuengling myself, looks marginally better I guess?

Then again, I was spending all my allowance on bcbs before I was even 21, maybe I'm an exception?

I would find it weird if one were to drink a top shelf craft beer one night and then the next is playing beer pong with Natty Ice and "pounding" beer after beer. Thought we drank the beer cause it tastes good, not cause it has alcohol?
