    Fellow fans of fermentation,
I will be in Columbus for 2-3 day in a few weeks and would love to get some insight on what breweries in the area are "musts." Please note that I am not interested in sweet, overdone beers (smoothie sours, milkshake IPAs etc) and mostly enjoy dark beers, pale ales, IPAs (that resemble beer), and saisons. Atmosphere definitely matters to me as well. I will be with my two kids (ages 9, 12), so if any breweries don't allow little ones (increasingly common in my area), that would be super helpful to know. The names that are currently on my radar are:

    Columbus Brewing
    Forbidden Root
Pretentious Barrel House - I fear all their beers may be too acidic/biting for my tastes
    Derive
    Zaftig
    Wolf's Ridge
    Noctera
    Parsons North
    Somewhere in Particular

I know very little about any of these places, so thank you so much for any and all thoughts!

@stapp101 I took my first trip to Columbus for a concert a week ago. Only hit up Hoof Hearted and Wolf’s Ridge. HH was nothing I’d return for, but we ended up hitting WR twice because we enjoyed it so much. Highly recommend making it one of your priorities.

I'd say Wolf's Ridge and Columbus Brewing are the two most essential stops in the city and both have a strong variety of styles that should align with your preferences (with the former better for darker styles and the latter better for hoppy beers). CBC just opened its second location near the East Market. I haven't been yet and have never had any problems with the original taproom, but the new location is much bigger and closer to other things to do.

I haven't been to everywhere else on your list, but I'd have in my next tier of breweries in the area Seventh Son, Gemut (if you have any interest in lagers), Parsons North, and Zaftig. Also if you're looking at getting any beer to go, it's worth mentioning the Jackie O's location right down the street from Wolf's Ridge. Unfortunately it probably won't be open for on-site yet when you visit, but they have an excellent selection of Jackie O's packaged products there.

Little Fish in Athens is worth the drive. Excellent variety of beers and great food.

Was just there on business two weeks ago for 4 days. Couldn't wait to get to Hoof Hearted and found great service, terrific food, and just okay beer.:grimacing:
    You'll like Wolf's Ridge.
I had lunch every day at North Market (https://northmarket.org/) - had something different every day - something for everyone!

Funny - I guess Hoof Hearted isn't on my radar as much as others'. I've had some of the beers they can at Twelve Percent in CT and haven't been blown away. Then again, their slogan, "Crafting beers with all the subtlety of David Lee Roth in bunless chaps" pretty much suggests they're not gonna make stuff I'm going to like.

Good to know about the market! Thanks for the info!

Hot Chicken Takeover has an awesome location in North Market which I hit up every time I'm in Columbus... It's one of my favorite meals. There's also a smaller bottle shop in north market that has a few taps where I've been able to have some nice ipa's to go along with my chicken. No complaints from me on that combo!

They had a rice lager that I enjoyed, but overall wasn't impressed. Their bread and butter is hazy IPAs and overly sweet/adjuncted stouts, which just isn't my bag. Also, the service was surprisingly quite poor that day. Not enough to ruin my day, but it added to it. Environment and food was good though.

Hoof roasts surprisingly good coffee that's available to go which is a plus. I like the beers, nothing crazy but not bad either. I usually stop when I'm in town.

I’ll throw a second recommendation for the Hoof coffee. My parents live outside Marengo and we stop by on the way for coffee at least as much for beer.

Wish I would have known about this coffee a week and a half ago. Would have been a perfect pick me up on the way out.

Unrelated question, where is the best store in Columbus for Belgians? I was underwhelmed by Kenny Rd Market.

    Thanks

Only place I've ever gotten 8-12 flight tasters and enjoyed every taste...very rare. Devil's Kettle in Athens is the other place I stop ...and Jackie O's after these two, any one of their spots in Athens.

I've been to the brewpub in Cbus and was underwhelmed, known for IPAs they had one available the rest were the trendy sours to go with the trend setters milling about, sounds like the brew farm just north in Delaware Co. is the place to go...hopefully its lines have cooled now that there's the bougie brewpub.

I'd probably go with Weiland's in that case. But in general it's harder to find Belgians and other imports, as it seems most places are stocking more US and local brews.
