    Hi,

I hope to get to Columbus, OH, this coming Thursday to visit at least three breweries - Barley's #2, Four String, and Gordon Biersch.

This trip got me to thinking about the three "soon-to-be" breweries that have, or others have, speculated that they could or would open this year but have yet to do so with about 4 weeks to go in 2012 - Actual, BRU, and Seventh Son.

Based on the Ohio Liquor Control Datbase, which is running behind due to the number of applications, Actual Brewing, 655 N. James Rd., does not appear to have an A1 brewing permit nor to have one pending. It seems unlikely that they will open before March and are much more likely to open in May.

BRU Brewing & BOP, 1288 N. High St., is listed as having an A1 permit pending, so if they already have their federal permit in hand or "in-the-mail", I suppose they could open yet this year but I'd think latest January/early February would be a better bet.

Seventh Son Brewing, 1101 N. 4th St., formerly Born Brewing, has an A1 license pending under the Born name. Im thinking it's a slim to no chance for a March start up and no certainty to be selling their beer by Mothers' Day.

Some of you know much more about one or more of these 3 hopefuls than I do, so fill us in on the status of their efforts.

    Cheers & Fresh Beers, Roger

Yeah, I'd definitely hit Columbus Brewing.

And though I can't speak to their license situation, I drove past the Seventh Son location yesterday and the windows were full of beautiful shiny beer equipment and the space is really coming along quickly.

Another one is Hoof Hearted Brewing in Marengo. It's just a little ways outside of the city on 71 towards Cleveland. Also check out Zauber brewing company in Grandview.

If I had to pick two it would be Barley's & Columbus (go wherever you have to, to get Bodhi- assuming you enjoy DIPAs)..
Zauber is up & running but only doing growlers at certain times on certain days, usually with a food truck parked outside. It's been a while since I hit them up, so I don't remember too many details- they definitely aren't bad, they just didn't amaze me. I'm not sure what kind of time frame or anything you're working with, so I'm just naming what I'd recommend as priorities.

Swing by the Barrel & Bottle in the North Market and talk with Colin or Jen who own the place. Seventh Son is their project. Colin also co-owns Bodegas which I'd hit up for its great draft list. Sounds like theyre getting close last time i asked.

Not sure why you picked those three to visit but Elevator and CBC are worth stops too. Zauber, Hoof hearted and even Rockmill in Lancaster may be worth looking into.

    Cheers!

"Why aren't you going to Columbus Brewing?"

I was there twice in November.

Why would you call your brewery "Who Farted"?

I agree but they do make some good stuff. They close at 4 or 5 everyday.

I hit Barley's (High St.), Columbus (twice), Elevator, Neil House, & Zauber last month. Z's food truck venders are a late spring, summer, & early fall activity. Z is planning to move into the high-end paint shop building 1/2 a block closer to 5th once the painters move to their new location.

    Hi,

While it isn't Columbus, I thought I'd give a shout-out to what I think is the 'newest brewery in Ohio' to open to the public - 50 West Brewing, 7668 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati - which opened last Friday.

They will probably hold that title until Dec. 15 when Flatrock Brewery, 215 Railway Rd., Holgate, will have their grand opening.

Perhaps Jackie O's #2, Athens, will be the next brewery after Flatrock to get the 'newest in Ohio' title?

    Cheers, Roger

Feel free to reply to posts rather than text quote - more likely to get responses that way.

It seems like you're doing a hell of a lot more research than anyone else here, so other than the occasional hearsay I'm not sure you'll get much concrete info on these new breweries. Actual is supposed to have reps at House Beer (newer bar) this week I believe, maybe some of their beer will be available. I don't think I've yet heard that they have a brewery/tasting room open to the public.

I haven't been but since you didn't mention it, have you tried Buckeye Lake?

IMHO though, just hit up the better ones or the better bars for that matter and enjoy some good beer.

Honestly you would be better off going to a beer bar to try a lot of different local brews. Off the op of my head I can't think of who has the best selection but 4th street bar and grill doesn't get much mention on here but it should.

Ok so a friend of a friend told me seventh son will open not this coming weekend, but next. Also, something about having to be open before they can brew beer....so I guess they'll be open with no beer for a bit. Again, go ask barrel n bottle. Which reminds me, barrel and bottle had weasel boy's Anastasia on tap yesterday (GABF gold winner). Weasel boy is Zanesville, which you could couple with buckeye lake and perhaps swing by House of Brews in Granville. Although that may be a rough drive. And I'll second 4th streets taps, which a couple days ago had Bodhi, Barleys infinity, 4 string, Narwhal, Iron Fist tripel IPA, Goose island imperial IPA... Cheers.

Seventh Son says they do not have their state brewing permit in hand and that they can not predict when the state will issue the permit. Thus, they can not open or predict when they might open until that permit arrives.

I'd guess they would open about 2 weeks after they start brewing so it could be in late December if they get the permit next week.

    Bump.

Since we have two new breweries opening in town:

Land Grant had its grand opening last weekend:
    https://landgrantbrewing.com/

And Hofbrauhaus - Columbus opens next Tuesday (their website has very little content):
    http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/10/hofbrauhaus-opens-tuesday-slideshow.html
    http://www.columbusunderground.com/first-look-hofbrauhaus-at-grandview-yard

And, since the last post, other places have opened/expanded, as well:

    Sideswipe: http://www.sideswipebrewing.com/

Actual has finally gotten up and running: http://www.actualbrewing.com/

Smokehouse Brewing has broken off from Barley's as a business entity (but still shares the same brewer): http://smokehousebrewing.com/

Wolf's Ridge Brewing opened as one of the best new restaurants in the city (they're building a new tap-room, too): http://www.wolfsridgebrewing.com/

Little Zaftig Brewing is in operation, and just hired a new brewer: http://www.drinkzaftig.com/

Four String Brewing's gotten its tasting room all set up: http://fourstringbrewing.com/

Similarly, Zauber's moved into much larger digs, around the corner from its original location, and has finished its beer hall and outdoor beer garden (EPL soccer and food trucks, too): http://zbeers.com/

North High Brewing has out grown its (obviously) High Street capacity and is building a larger prodfuction brewery on Cleveland and Fifth: http://www.northhighbrewing.com/
    http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...s-getting-taste-of-expansion-as.html?page=all

Columbus Brewing Company has finally found a MUCH larger space to brew in (bottled Bodhi for all, coming soon): http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus...mbus-brewing-co-spending-5m-in-west-side.html

Staas Brewing extended the metro area brewing scene to Delaware: http://www.staasbrewing.com/

Homestead Brewing and Granville Brewing have done the same in Brew's Cafe territory:
    http://homesteadbeerco.com/
    http://www.granvillebrewing.com/

Also out of the immediate city center, in the next few months, Pigskin Brewing and Temperance Row Brewing (the return of Scott Francis to the local brewery scene) will open in, respectively, Gahanna and Westerville:
    http://www.pigskinbrewingcompany.com/
    http://drinkupcolumbus.com/2014/05/12/temperance-row-brewing-uptown-deli-westerville/

And, closer to me, Lineage Brewing will open next year: http://www.lineagebrew.com/?age-verified=242c21c041

Sorry of I missed any updates over the past two years. A lot of very good things have been happening.
