In mid-November my company is sending me to Chanute KS for a few months for a project.

From what I've seen it looks to be a pretty small town, but I'm going to be there for a few months so I was wondering what is around that area (within a few hours drive) beer-wise.

Also I will be driving up from Tampa. Is there any good stops along the way that I should make.

    Thanks for the help.

Wow - I live in KC, and I've heard of Chanute but had to look it up. Looks like you are right smack in the middle of nowhere. KC is about a 2 hour drive, so it qualifies in your criteria. Lots of good places here, but I would think that would be quite a drive for beer unless you came up for the weekend.

Pittsburg is a college town, so there might be something there, but I don't know too much about it.

    Good luck!

Southeast Kansas is severely lacking in craft beer. I haven't been to Chanute in ages, so I can't help much. Did find a store in Chanute with a catchy name dickliquor.com. Wichita, KC and Joplin Mo are probably your best bets in your limits. If you're not familiar with the beers available in Kansas, Tallgrass (Manhattan), Free State (Lawrence) and Marshall (Tulsa) are some of my favorites.

I live in Wichita, and I'm guessing Chanute has only the basics in craft beer (New Belgium, Sam Adams, etc). I have no idea what you're looking for but I'm guessing you'll need to drive somewhere else.

Chanute, by my estimation would be slim-pickings for beer. Not sure what other people more experienced with that part of KS might tell ya, but my advice would be to go to Iola for beer. Still not huge but a bigger town than Chanute (I believe).

Thanks for the help. From my research the pickings looked scarce.

I'm going to be there for a few months so I'm sure ill travel around, I was thinking of heading to Kansas City at least once. And I don't know what the brewery laws are but I might take a trip to tallgrass.

If you go to Manhattan include a stop at Little Apple Brewing. Nothing there is packaged, but one of my kids knows to bring me a growler of Red Ale. I would avoid the city on home game weekends, both football and basketball. Lawrence I would avoid during games in basketball season.

The worst part of Kansas beer law is the approval process to import. There is also a law limiting grocery store beer to 3.2%. And they don't allow shipments. Some counties and cities are allowed to be dry, and Sunday sales have to be voted on by the city or county. If you compare Kansas beer laws to Nebraska or Oklahoma, they are in the dark ages.

For what's available in each state go to www.seekabrew.com. Also, some of the craft sites tell where there beer is sold.

As mentioned, you're headed for a pretty disappointing part of the state. The Lawrence/Topeka area has Free State, 23rd Street, and Blind Tiger, all of which make pretty good beer. In terms of buying craft bottles, there are a few stores scattered around the area, but you'd probably have better look sliding into Missouri or coming up to the Northeast part of the state.

I would disagree with you, NO one has more ass backward laws than OK in the region, especiaally when talking about brewpubs, growlers (no such thing here) or being able to sell full strength beer at anty thing other than room temp. Y'all get way more beer up there than we do (at least Wichita compared to ANY where in OK )

OP Macadoodles in Joplin or Brown Derby in Springfied, Mo are reccomendations

Thanks for the heads up on the alcohol laws, I didn't think about selling on Sunday and % laws.

I still don't have an intended date to head out there but ill be coming in through Springfield and was planning on stopping there until I get a chance to explore and find some place that has good beer.

Macadoodles in Springfield and Joplin has a pretty nice selection -- Founders, Firestone Walker, Odell, Boulevard, Deschutes, Schlafly, which are not available in FL. Might be able to find some Lips of Faith (New Belgium) and Goose Island (Sofie, etc.) as well. Missouri tends to get better distribution than Kansas (imo), so you may want to load up on your way in to Chanute.

    Let me rephrase that.
If you compare Kansas beer laws to Nebraska or Oklahoma, they (NE & OK) are in the dark ages.

Kansas laws are screwy compared to some states, but Oklahoma is still trying to remain under prohibition, which they repealed in 1959. http://okiebrewreview.wordpress.com/oklahoma-beer-laws
