Hey all. I'll be in Pittsburg 9/17 - 18 to see the Sox/Pirates. I'll be staying at Holiday Inn on South 10th St. Any good beer bars near PNC, or the hotel? I'm looking for any place that focuses on local brew, but will go with anything you got.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

The locals might be more willing to help if you spell the town correctly.

There's a beer bar right next to the stadium called "the beer market"
I believe that holiday inn is in south side? You can check out urban tap, fat heads, smoking joes, Carson street deli (I've never been, but I believe they sell six packs), the library, OTB bicycle cafe, and double wide all have pretty solid craft beer selections.

It has more history (it's around 111 years old) than stellar beer selection, but Max's Allegheny Tavern is not too far a walk from PNC. German themed restaurant. Stepping into the bar is stepping back in time. As long as you don't mind the north side.

The Beer Market is right by PNC, yes, but that place is going to be crazy during game time; especially with the way the Pirates are playing.

Another PNC option is Rivertowne North Shore, which is also in the immediate PNC Park area. Expect the same volume of crowd as you would at The Beer Market.

Draai Laag, Roundabout, Church Brew Works, Grist House, Hop Farm, and Pennsylvania Brewing Company are all within an acceptable driving distance. I listed them in my order of suggestion. As Draai Laag has really limited hours, I would make any effort you could to get there on Thursday night as it is a superb brewery, when they're at their best.

Great suggestions. I would add Proper as another option. Would be a short walk across the bridge into town and they have a good draft list with usually a good list of local breweries on tap.

Would also add that while you are attending the game the Hall of Fame club has the best beer options in the park.

Damn, I wish I was staying longer. Sounds like lots to check out.
What's up with the north side?

Beyond the stadiums and museums there are some pretty rough areas of the north side. This maybe what was meant in saying that about the north side but I could be wrong. Fatheads beers are half off during the weekdays from 4-6pm so that's a good way to try what they brew.

It is one of the lesser polished areas of the city, but nothing major. I am around there a lot and I'm not really bothered by it; just throwing it out there in case you weren't aware. I personally don't think it's that big of a deal where you'd be walking through, but that's me.

The north side isn't that bad. Some parts are but on the whole it's not that bad. Hell my boss lives there and he and his wife make a lot of money. The closer to the stadium, the better though.

yea there are good spots and bad no doubt. some areas are definitely rough though. I think some parts have improved dramatically just in the last decade. I second the Draai Laag recommendation. They are my favorite local brewery as of now

You don't want to end up on east ohio street to late at night but the bar scene down by the stadiums is great you will not have a problem finding a good spot to find a beer.

Totally agree on FatHeads, Carson Street Deli and Pipers Pub. I did not check the address and thought you were staying right by the stadiums. The three of those places will blow away anything on the North Shore.

Dunno what you mean by any of that , but I'll surely ask tomorrow. I'm definitely coming home with some of their beer.
