So I just completed my AIT course for the Army and am coming visit my fiance for a week before we both head back to MN. (Sorry I won't be able to bring any MN whales)

My question is- "In the Blacksburg/Roanoke area, what are some beers/places/eateries that are maybe lesser known but deserving of some attention?"

We already planned a trip to the Blue 5 restaurant and Awful Arthur's but I figured I'd like to turn this mini-vacation into a mini-beercation as well.

    Thanks,

Awful Arthur's is terrible, in my humble opinion. Blue 5 is the best beer bar in Roanoke, however. Some decent new spots have popped up as well. Beamers 25 has good food and a nice tap list. Also, Wasena Tap Room just opened last week -- they have some decent stuff as well. Martin's has some good cans/bottles. Your best bet for a beer shop in Roanoke is Mr. Bill's, which I love....but if you make it to Blacksburg, do yourself a favor and stop by The Vintage Cellar. It is absolutely incredible. Also in Blacksburg, a great bar is 622 North. The Cellar is okay too, and the beer shop inside is really nice. Hope this info helps! Have a good time!

My opinion--Wine Gourmet is a better shop than Mr. Bill's. Cool thing is, they are only about 5 miles apart so stopping at both is quite easy.

+1 to Vintage Cellar and 622 North in Blacksburg, great selections and great people. Used to regular them for awhile in college. Never found anything too worthwhile in Roanoke IMO.

Sounds good, thanks guys. I think we'll have a pretty good time in the area.

    Happy Holidays,

Resurrecting this old thread to say I'm going to be in the Roanoke/Salem area Jan 20-25th. Thanks for this info, I'll be checking these out.

Also, if anybody maybe wanted to trade some beers, send me a BM! I'm coming from Newport News, VA. I may have a can or two of Heady / Abrasive to trade.

Salem now hosts it's own microbrewery, Parkway BC. I'm not sure if they are even open for business yet at the brewpub but their latest news was that they expected to have their products out on the market any day now. I don't know a thing about their quality, just throwing this out there.

If you trade 2, you'll have an excuse to buy another case!

Haha, here is the problem, I can be a real pain to trade locally. I have plenty of Wake N Bake! Send me a BM if you want to try to figure something small out. I am sure we can.

Haha I think I'll wait until next year on that. Still have plenty though!
