I have a beer cooler in my restaurant with some pretty nice brews. Should I be concerned with the fluorescent light from the cooler making the beer "light struck"?

Yeah, if you believe the Master Brewers Association of America:
You can read a study on the topic here -

Great, thanks a lot. I will taking the light out of my beer cooler tonight. It's not a display, so I doesn't have to look pretty.

We had a good discussion a while ago.
I recall thinking I do not believe the Brewers Association. I mean, all this beer is sitting in stores under fluorescent lighting. Bottled beer that is not moved "in a few days" is potentially light struck? Just doesn't seem like reality. We would be having a very big skunk crisis on our hands given how much beer is in proximity to fluorescent lighting.
    Cheers

I agree. I'm concerned because I have some beer that sits in the cooler for months. I don't push a lot of quantity, but I love providing an excellent beer list. Just trying to ensure I keep everything as good as possible.

We took the lights out of our cooler for this reason. is it that much of a concern? Who knows, but better safe than not safe.

I think what many miss in that quote is the word "can":
...it's not "will" or "does". Lots of variables involved, as well as degrees of "light-struck-ness" (< sic! :grimacing:). And stronger flavored beers, hoppier beers, darker beers can hide slight skunkiness, and an aggressive pour can dissipate much of the odor of some lightstruck beer, etc.

I suppose, ultimately, the best test to do at home would be to expose some of the same beer to fluorescent light for an extended periods and compare them side-by-side with other bottles from the same case that have been kept in the dark. (But my "science project" days are long gone, and I just don't like to gamble with my beer anyway :grinning:).

For more info, I'll again suggest the study I linked to above - in which glass color and thickness, nearness to the florescent tube, different types of florescent tubes, and, of course, time, all come into play.

Note - It's not the Brewers Association, it's the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (different organizations with very different missions).

I first got curious about this after I "taste tasted" a couple of my bottles. Quality Control, ya' know. I had a few bottles directly by the light, and they seemed to be slightly sour before long before they normally should be. The rest of the same case of the same beer seems to still be fine. Regardless, I turned off the light in the cooler. I've invested a small fortune (especially considering the small size of my place) in a high quality beer list, and I'll be damned if I let a $4 light ruin the best beer selection I've ever had!!!!! Cheers

I proclaim total ignorance so take the link below for what you will. When I went to this store the owner installed lighting that is supposed to block lighting problems.

I have a possible line on a True cooler and if it works out I Plan to install switches on both the light inside and the one on top. I also plan to put some limo quality window tinting on the door, even though its in a closed garage and dark most of the time. I also plan to replace the wire shelves with tempered glass. I'm just not sure if its worth the trouble, as my freezerless fridge works fine.
