I plan on testing the heat retention on a 10 gallons batch, and adding insulation as needed. I have decent burner control, so working that out should be simple. Eventually HHERMS is definitely the way to go!

HERMS = Heat exchange recirculation mashing system

For herms you basically pump your wort through a coil in your HLT to maintain mash temps

RIMS = Recirculating Infusion mashing system

For RIMS you recirculate your wort across a ULWD heating element to maintain mash temps

Both systems have pluses and minuses, Ive used both and switched over to RIMS permanently in the past year or so. I like that approach better because I have quicker response times for step mashers and/or mash out, and I really like the fact that I can completely disassemble the RIMS tube for cleaning (which you cant do with a HERMS coil)

My herms coil is going to be re-purposed to regulate temperature on a conical Im building = no contact with beer = no worries about cleaning

Oh, that's awesome man! I'm semi familiar with the processes of both, it's good to hear your take on it, being that you've used both. I like the RIMS tube, and would love to learn more about it. I just dropped quite a bit of coin on getting the basics for this half barrel system, so the rest will have to come later. Where did you get your tube?
