Not sure where to post this, but my other thread was locked before I was able to obtain an answer.
My confusion began when I inadvertantly rated the Belks ESB under the Boont ESB listing. At the the time, there was a listing for each: Boont had over 450 reviews/ratings and Belks had only 1. I realized my error and deleted my first rating and rated it under the listing for Belks ESB. I found it odd that this beer now only had 2 ratings total (my rating and a review). Anderson Valley's website as of today lists it as Belks ESB. Google searchs list it as Boont (formally Belks) ESB.

    Ok, still with me?

I decided to go through the history of reviews here and found the following:
    April 2007: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/619/?ba=ccrida
user writes "the Boont ESB is hazy burnt orange with..."

    October 2007: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/619/?ba=ImBOBtheBEERguy
User writes: "Was called Belks ESB not Boont ESB The bottle in the picture says Belks ESB and here it is listed as Boont. Which is it?"

    2009: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/619/?ba=Drew966
user calls it Boont ESB: "Boont ESB pours an orange color with..."

Surprised I live in Maryland and am the first one to write a review of this California brewers beer on Beer Advocate. (this was under the Belks ESB listing)

So, it was first referred to as Boont ESB in April 2007, then Belks ESB in October2007, and back to Boont ESB in 2009, and I just drank one called Belks ESB. I doubt I drank a 7+ year old bottle.
If one were to go back through the years, it changes multiple times from boont to belks to boont to belks, etc.
    Any thoughts on this?

It is currently called Belk's ESB. Maybe they changed from Boont due to it getting confused with the amber - then changed it back - and then back again? Keep in mind this is a brewery with a disc golf course in mendocino....so...yeah...

You have to admit it is quite confusing, isn't it?

Very - usually when a brewery changes the name of a beer, they stick with it, not flip-flop back and forth.

I'm guessing that the Boont ESB listing was originally done in error, and people just went with it. I'm pretty sure it was always Belk's ESB- I have the 1996 Michael Jackson Pocket Guide handy right now, and they are listed as Boont Amber and Belk's ESB even back then.

Personally i just think of them as the ESB and the Amber myself, without paying much attention to the rest of the name, so I could see how people could just review the style designation without noticing the other details.

the listing was done in error by whom? Beeradvocate?

If you go to anderson valleys website, and look at their beers, it lists the ESB as "belks". However, click on the link, and it gives a 404 error that says the page can't be found. Furthermore, if you notice, clicking on the link actually shows:

    http://avbc.com/our-beers/boont-extra-special-beer/

Notice the "boont" in there, not Belks.

Conspiracy theorist I am not, but this is just very confusing.

To your first question- I've added beers before and found it was up to my judgement as to what to call it, what style it was, etc. Obviously this can be corrected down the road by others reporting it, but the initial discretion goes to the one adding the beer.

I do see what you are saying about that url, so that does add to the confusion. Have you tried to contact AV about their timeline with the names?

to add some smoke to the mystere that is the beers name... I have noticed that bottles labelled as "boont esb" say extra special beer, whereas those labelled Belks ESB say extra special bitter.

    interesting...

I did contact AV to inquire about the name.

Anyone else take a stab at this puzzling little naming history?
