...and all the other local breweries! http://www.pastemagazine.com/articl...115-of-the-best-american-dipa-and-im.html?a=1
Yeah usually true, but unlike most lists they actually go into long detail about their blind tasting process. They actually had a panel of beer professionals doing the judging, not just some internet blogger throwing together a list of well known beers. And this is a good quote from the article: "...you will no doubt notice plenty of well-known, world-class beers that are missing. And there are a dozen reasons why this could be. Here’s the least likely reason: We “forgot” about it, or weren’t aware of it. Here’s the most likely reason: There isn’t a fresh batch of it out there right now."
There are a few very celebrated breweries that didn't submit anything, but they were certainly asked to. I can only speculate that it was a conscious decision not to participate: after you reach a certain level of hype, there's not much to gain, but a lot to lose, by going up blind against hundreds of beers. Now that Hill Farmstead is sending so much beer to NYC I'm looking forward to more opportunities for tasting them side by side with our DIPA's. I think it will be an illuminating comparison.
I'm a little suspicious of the qualifications of a panel from what is first and foremost a music magazine. Particularly of a panel for which it was their first time trying Heady given how long it's been available.
Paste Magazine is a pretty well-respected entity though, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out they're down with craft beer.
Agree with Mark. They've covered beer on numerous occasions before. And as far as never having Heady before, given how difficult it is to obtain outside of the trading world or through long drives and great timing, I don't think you can write anyone off as not being a serious beer drinker simply on that criteria.
haha. honestly we're just psyched that with the new influx of tons of HF into brooklyn, there will be lots of opportunities to drink it next to ours. they make some of our favorite DIPA's after all. like the hulkster says, to be the best you gotta beat the best. if you read the blurb on tesseract it's obvious a bunch of them have tasted heady. but they had a big panel, not everyone had had it.
Hill Farmstead vs. Grimm side by side tastings... Hop heaven! Excited for future batches of Grimm hoppy.
Ha, I hear you. I'm a big fan of HF's DIPAs too, and fully agree it will be interesting to have theirs next to yours (and Other Half for that matter). And by interesting, I mean for determining definitively who makes the best beer. But really, congrats oh these rankings, great recognition.
