Hey everyone! I just got a conical fermenter for Christmas and I am stoked to use it. I've only ever used plastic buckets though. http://www.minibrew.com/products/6-5x-gallon-conical-fermenter?variant=25674595014 This is the fermenter I have. What are the dos and don'ts for using these?
I second that. Seems like filling with cleaner and soaking or using a pump would be the best way to clean that. Keep brushes and scrubbies away from it. Other advice: 1. Time to measure it and find an old fridge on Craigslist for temp control. Conicals are awesome, but they certainly limit your temp control options. 2. Add water in one gallon (or 1/2 gal.) increments and mark the fermenter in sharpie on the outside. Translucency - that’s a nice advantage over stainless! Also might want to avoid iodine or you will eventually lose this feature. 3. Always dump the dead shit that collects on the bottom the day after pitching. That stuff loves to clog valves and I seriously doubt you can put much pressure on this fermenter if it gets clogged.
Actually looks pretty good,,,but I would want a lot more/some more info on the type of plastic before getting too excited...didn't see any in the ad which makes me suspicious.
I was thinking your concerns might have been about durability, scratching, etc., but the website you linked suggests they were grounded in toxicity.
