Same with parents. People that let their kids run around and be loud are the worst. If I took my child to a brewery they would behave or I would leave, but my child is only 5 months old so she doesn't really do much.

I totally get it, it's like everybody clear the way so the beer loser can concentrate on his adult beverage. Rad.

Along the lines of the discussion about local breweries, I think there’s too much leeway given to breweries because they’re “local craft” and not on the merits of their beer. This is reflected in undeservedly high ratings.

It especially bothers me when the brewery only does the typical ale lineup of Blonde, Pale, IPA. No matter what kind of gimmick or aesthetic their business model has, you will always be just another IPA brewer to me.

Any time a smaller, local craft brewer makes beers that are all super hoppy, high-ABV and/or jacked up with weird flavorings, I automatically think they are hiding their inability to make good beer and are trying to compensate. These gimmicks excuse poor technique, rather than providing learning opportunities to make something truly great and unique.

I don't care for drinking at the beach in any capacity.

You could probably expand this to include drinking in the heat in any capacity, but something about the beach and booze just never clicked for me.

Just had a great pint in a pub on the beach. But it was beautifully kept and served cask ale so not from a can or bottle

I can definitely do beach bar, get me some shade and an actual bar to sit at and I'll drink anywhere really, but the whole "spend the afternoon in a beach chair with an umbrella a cooler" thing has never been great for me, and I say this as someone who grew up near the beach.

I like the Corona commercials where they're playing volleyball in the sun, and in the background you see the cold beer they're going to drink, waiting for them in a tub of ice, skunked Coronas in clear bottles

Gonna have to disagree on kids and dogs. While I dont have kids never been super bothered by kids at breweries. And a brewery is not a bar, it does not serve liquor. Most of the breweries around here are very kid friendly and it makes it a more enjoyable laid back experience than just a bunch of old people drinking. Idk Id prefer a family with well behaved kids than a bunch of beer nerds. I am usually bothered way more by adults than kids.

Second, if your dog is well behaved and you keep it on a leash near you (ideally in a down) then I dont have any problem with it. However there are a lot of bad dog owners who should not bring their dogs to breweries or anywhere.

There was a bar near my old childhood home that was once called The Longbranch. It's still there, but sporting a newer name. The oldest continually operating bar in town When I was about 4 or 5 ('55 or '56) my Dad would drop by for a couple of longneck Schlitz after mowing the grass..I always had a hot dog, chips, and a coke. There was then an old point of sale item from Anheuser Busch that depicted Custer's Last Stand. It fascinated me. I went in there somewhere in the 90s and that thing was still on the wall.

I've cited Red Oak Brewery that was originally a brewpub at Guilford College just up the road. We always went on snow days, had a sandwich, dad had a couple Red Oak Ambers, and everyone had a great time. My kids are now 36 and 33 and often tell me how much they loved those visits. There are venues and times that kids should not be around, but lunch and dinner with a bunch of friendly people is good medicine for anyone.

For someone in a "taproom" (err, have we gotten that pretentious???) to get on a high horse and make a grand assumption that everyone with kids is driving drunk, and that all others are doing the right things is offensive. Guy like this would be put to rest quickly in most spaces.

I don't think there's any spaces where that guy would be put to rest quickly for that opinion. I see your point though. I also see that a taproom is not a romper room where people should bring their kids to be raised free range by every person in the space. Keep your kid relatively quiet and watch them. If they can't behave then it's time to wrap it up and head on out. It's not everyone's fault that your kid is tired or bored so don't make everyone else suffer the consequences. Same with dogs. If your mans best friend just wants to chill by your side while you enjoy a beverage, I'm happy for you. Dogs can provide a lifetime of happiness for their owners. However, some people don't like their crotches sniffed, wet noses/being slobbered on or even worse, are strongly allergic. The bottom line is that if your child or pet is going to be a bother to people wherever you're going, you shouldn't take your child or pet.

Couldn't freshness have something to do with this, especially with IPA's? Idealistically we would try all beers at peak freshness, but sadly that isn't reality.
    Cheers!

As a parent and former owner of many dogs I wholeheartedly agree.

It's common sense. The rabid responses at either end of the spectrum are beyond me

Never been to brewery that resembled a romper room. I'm fortunate in that sense. I just think you can seem rather cantankerous to begrudge children and dogs and swathe them in one swiping gripe. Perhaps these people might be better off getting out of the "tap room" and into the light In the case CaevDave, he's got a rather strange outlook on beer. It defines him, and as such, anything that disrupts that space is effectively disrupting his mind.

If you're not put off by his swearing in front of children antics, then perhaps you need to play that scene out in your head, the way he describes it.

    It's really sad.

Oh, and for what it is worth. I have 3 dogs and 2 kids and I none of them have been in a "tap room"

I don't like when breweries make every style "hoppy", it frequently makes the beer unbalanced. Also, aging IPA style beers in anything except gin barrels, gross.

I've actually never experienced an issue with kids at breweries, same things with dogs.

    Re: Kids

Just so I have this straight: Kids have to be quiet and behaved, but the adults get to swear loudly and indiscriminately? And this is because alcohol is served? Sounds reasonable.

I’m pretty sure most brewery owners would prefer children having fun in their spots than loser adults cursing loudly over which IPA has mosaic and which has citra.
