I did that (once)! :astonished: Couple of decades ago now, early afternoon and I was the only one at the bar drinking --- can't recall now exactly what I asked after looking at the slim pickins of the house beers on tap at a brewpub (which was really more restaurant than brewery) - something like "Oh, I don't know - what's popular these days..." or maybe, "What's new on tap?" (Looking for the freshest beer).

So, I got the Helles on the bartender's rec.

A couple of minutes later, the brewer showed up and said to the bartender, "Are you pushing that old Helles? I need that tank space!"

    :grimacing:

Gee, that seems awfully harsh ... but I did learn my lesson. Just walked out of a well-known chicken wing chain when I looked through their huge plastic-coated, generic-sounding "menu" (arranged by style) and the beers listed did not at all seem to match up with the tap handles.

"Are all the beers on tap listed in the menu?"
    "No."

(Then what's the point of a beer menu?)
"Oh, OK. What Sixpoint beer is that on tap?"
    "Uh....I think it's a lager."
    "Oh, Alpenflo, maybe?"

    [Blank stare]
    "Good-bye."

Same place on my previous attempt- ordered a locally-brewed pale ale. Bartender grabs another brewers' tap handle for some fruit-flavored nonsense.

"No, I ordered the ABC Pale Ale!"
    "This IS the ABC."
"But the tap is for XYZ Cherry Cucumber Fizz!"
    "Same brewery."

Uh, no it wasn't - but even if it had been- if you don't have the correct tap handle (which you should have*), put some generic "Chalkboard" handle on it or otherwise cover up the "wrong" brand and beer type.

    "Good-bye".

Allrye Allrye Allrye by Karl Strauss is one of the best beer names I've heard in a long time.

Not sure if this is controversial, but I know some people hate puns.

    Cats, darned phone!

Wimped out and had a fresh Orval, and an aged Orval, to enjoy the difference. That beer list, the size of a big phone book, was intimidating.

I kind of think NEIPAS are vastly overrated. Also naming schemes for beer should make sense. For example Pseudo Sue is a classic APA King Sue should be an IPA, then emperor sue should be a DIPA. Once you change styles change naming schemes.

It's the Alpenflo Curse™. I had the same thing happen to me, except rather than being at a big chain, I was at a good neighborhood restaurant with roughly half a dozen taps and pride in being a beer place with local options. From a place like that, if I ask, "What's the name of the Sixpoint lager?" (wondering if it was Alpenflo), please don't respond with "Um, it's just called lager." Then don’t come back after checking with the bartender just to update me that you were correct... that “It’s just called lager.” My mother-in-law needed me to pick a beer for her and I didn’t want to order her their Pilsner.

That situation was forgivable, but what was more annoying was a separate incident at a movie theater that serves beer to the audience. I was one of 7 people in the entire theater. Having gotten there early, I had already scoped out all of the tap handles at the bar in the lobby and saw an Alpenflo handle. Once in the theater, I asked the server what beers they had (the menu says: "Ask your server what seasonal beers we have.") and they gave me "the blank stare." Interrupting their stare, I said, "OK, I saw you had Sixpoint Alpenfo - I'll have that." The server eventually brought me my beer. I asked him, “Is this the Sixpoint?” He responded, “Yeah, Sixpoint.” After he left, I took a sip and realized they gave me PUMKING! Dear God, that’s not exactly a beer you can use as a substitution. I wasn't at a bar where I could easily give the beer back, I was already seated in the dark movie theater without a server to be found. I was gonna live with it. I guess Pumking was a tiny bit appropriate, since I was watching the new Halloween movie... but that beer was easily scarier than anything on the screen.

I'm sick of the 4 pack pint sized cans for equal or more money I used to pay for a six pack of 12oz bottles/cans. The only good thing is when i somehow misplaced my bottle opener.

Just posted what may be a very unpopular opinion in its own thread Pliny the Overrated. It is about beers which rate well when people know what they are drinking, but do not do well in Blind Tastings.

Yeah . . . I don't want to workout in a brewery, nor do I want to have a beer directly afterwards. I, at least, want to wait until after I've had my protein shake and a shower to start drinking. Hello, there, Saturdays!

Cats is a pretty wide category there, my friend. I obviously wouldn't want someone to bring their large wild cat like a panther or tiger to a bar, but a medium-hair tabby cat is most definitely okay. Maine coons can be a little scary and that extra fluff could land in my beer (ew!), but are mostly gentle. I'd just be cautious if the brewery is known for a mouse mascot. That's a problem a brewin'.

I'll state the obvious, but I'm always okay with cougars being around the bar though, but I'm not strictly talking cats at this point.

My cat Bob  is the flight jedi. If Bob cat sniffs and 1) stays put I’ll sample, 2) purrs and winks I’ll order a pint, 3) tries to cover it up I’ll pass.
