The common use of ale to describe all top fermented brews does lead to anomalies.
Every pub has adverts on the walls offering Ales and Stouts. At one time there were two separate industries.
Some beers such as Kolsch are defined in the country of origin as a Top Fermented lager (Obergarige Lagerbier)..... It is their beer style and it is arrogant to insist on calling it an ale. In any case Germans correctly consider Ale to be a British beer style.

My previous post 4657 re: Tales of Arcadia was not to insinuate EMJ was a troll. That’s a personal judgement call for each member and a forum call for staff. It was more to draw attention to the character Gunmar being “hardened” when relegated to a “cage”, and I perceived some possible tells mid last week that made me think Gunmar might be EMJ.

I’m not sure what EMJ did to be relieved of his posting privileges a few months back.....maybe it was a particularly offensive post, or maybe it was an aggregate of unheeded warnings???

    Was he abrasive? At times.
Did he post flamboyant stuff just to get a rise out of folks? Sure, but I wonder if that stemmed more from wanting to be the catalyst (or continuation) for a good argument rather than just trying to be BA’s resident Howard Stern....but there were times when the line was blurred, or crossed.
Many of his posts in the homebrewing forum exhibited a good knowledge of brewing, especially when yeast was the topic, and he was often ready to offer up genuinely good non-brash advice, or links to technical sources for a deeper dive.

He and I had a lengthy PM in which he offered (sans pomposity) some good tips for home brewing. The exchange was pleasant and educational, interspersed with conversation about places we either both visited or recommended. Seemed just like a regular Joe.

To me, EMJ’s postings were enjoyable and entertaining for the most part, and there were no issues (as far as I know) between him and me.

    My controversial opinion

95% of breweries have no business expanding. The market is saturated. If you’re doing well, don’t ruin a good thing by buying or moving to a fancy new venue, ruining your beer by scaling up, and going bankrupt.

Expansion should be reserved for brewers who have no choice due to space / supply limitations. It breaks my heart when I see a brewery self destruct because they got over-zealous.

"And another thing: What's all this I keep hearing about Hasbro beers? Have we got toy companies in the brewing business now? What are they gonna do, put it in Transformer cans? Now THAT would be pretty cool! Maybe instead of unicorn farts, they could do My Little Pony farts. Still, the whole idea sounds pretty stupid to... wait, what's that?"

    "HAZEbro. It's HAZEbro beers."

    "Never mind."

C'mon, man - don't be ridiculous. Who would think a brewery would also manufacture toys?

Now Nike missile parts and Seeburg juke boxes - well, sure!

This line of thinking is very sensible for 99.99% of companies in almost every business right now imo (speaking of start-ups within the last 7 years or so.)

Hilarious. Some Pittsburgh brewery needs to release "Guided Missile Components and Juke Boxes IPA" immediately.

This does make North Carolina look enlightened relative to alcohol regulations. Here, the bible belt has buckled significantly, and revenue is the answer. The local breweries are strong economic engines that people love.

I can see how that would be true for some.

My user experience improved greatly by using the ignore feature on him. I have a limited ability to put up with folks like him who can't distinguish between having a learned opinion and speaking the Absolute Truth, and who believe they are the King of the Cognoscenti not some douchebag nobody on BA

If only there were a self-ignore option, you could be a truly happy man. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Let's face it: I'm probably on Dave's ignore list and he'll never see this post.)

Maybe I haven’t been around here long enough for someone to aggravate me to the point that I ignore them with a click of a button.

....that sparked a thought of a proverb about bliss.

I would have to say yes, the bigger cities here have opened a bit more like alcohol sales on Sundays breweries being open. It was a local thing but last year was the first year in our county beer could be sold on Sunday. It was of course with the stipulation you buy the $3000 "Sunday" License to be able to do it. I am really shocked the local store I go to is still paying it, they used to be open on Tuesday and closed Sunday not it is filled. They must be making enough to cover paying the fee. I do not want to bunch entire states in a bucket but from the places I have been here and the places I have been in NC the people in NC seem more open minded about things like alcohol, here if you see anyone buying beer on Sunday it is the guy at Wal mart with a case of Bud. The shops and breweries I go to here are still pretty dead on Sunday.

It's likely there won't be another obsessive, serial poster here with that degree of unpleasant arrogance, and it is likely EMJ's next sock account will be deleted even more quickly, so I don't think you have anything to worry about
