I am not great about finding old posts. I just bought a used True GDM 49 two door cooler. I'm told the upper range of temperature is 41 degrees. I know this not optimal, but a new thermostat and installation would be about $250. I realize high temps and fluctuating temps are harmful, but would 41 degrees be harmful? Any prior thread references or opinions would be appreciated.

41 degrees would not be harmful to the beer, but your beer will follow a somewhat different path in terms of cellaring development (aside from developing more slowly, there may be specific flavors/reactions that wouldn't occur at such a low temperature).

Many people use a separate temperature controller (Johnson Controls manufactures one available from many homebrew supply places) that sits inline with the power supply of the cooler, but those are designed for use with e.g. simple home chest freezers and I can't speak to whether it would work well with your cooler.

Thank you for the useful information. It's a little difficult when you have a diverse selection of beers to store. Some that should be consumed fresh and cold and others that can go out for years. I know Johnson Controls has a local office. I will definitely check them out. Thanks again.
