I went to college in San Luis Obispo, CA and I frequented a local joint called Spikes. They had a beer card and when you drank 40 beers from around the world, you got a plaque on the wall and a t-shirt. do that three times and you got your own personalized mug to drink out of when you came in (mine is now in my kitchen cabinet). It was a super fun place and some of my best memories from those years happened inside that place. On thing I REALLY remember is that at one point their beer from England was Coopers Real Ale. It was a FANTASTIC tasting unfiltered beer that I think of still to this day, but I cannot find it ANYWHERE. I live in the SF bay area and have looked at most of the specialty stores in the area but no luck. Does anyone know what ever became of this wonderful ale?
Perhaps you mean Coopers Sparkling Ale or Coopers Pale Ale, which are brewed in Australia? They've recently changed US importers (from Anchor in CA, to Total Beverage Solution in SC) which may be why you currently can't find it. Check with TBS to find their CA distributor(s) - http://www.totalbeveragesolution.com/home.php
I just hope the OP didn't have to drink a can of that to get his "mug" - talk about nursing a beer all night...
It's pretty easy to find out here, you should have no trouble trading for some if you can't find it locally.
That always happens with me too, haha. That's what happens when you're always trying better beer. Nostalgia factor for retrying is nice though.
That's awesome, I had a place like that during college in Long Beach. Made it up to the wall three times! Not sure if you're by Orange County, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Hi-Times in Costa Mesa.
