my job takes all around NY State. this property, umm, left me speechless. uncharacteristic but true. they all appeared in good condition, but the building is abandoned. no sign, no description, windows blacked out, in a part of town where when you see a red light you don't stop. 9 high and three deep. you do the math. there is clearly no shortage of second hand corny kegs in NY State. that is all.
That's a lot of kegs. I knew a guy around here that's had a ton of these as well because his family used to own a water delivery business that used them. He inherited them and didn't know what to do with them. Some of them had been sealed for over 20 years and had plenty of pressure.
agreed! pair that collection with my piece of industrial-zoned property... and boom! now- if only I could find someone to brew with...
i did some research at the county tax assessors office. the property is owned by a family business that has an ice company, co2 distibution and beverage supply (generic soda for restaurants, "7" compares favorably to 7-UP apparantly.) some old aerials show these 9 deep. they've got a shit ton of corny kegs. they will allow about 10 a month out the door for cash. $40 tested or $35 you pull from the stockpile. all need to be cleaned, O-Rings should probably be replaced. they don't do retail sales- but everyone likes cash. if anyone near the Ithaca NY area is interested let me know, i can pick up and hold if you advance the cash. i'm not adding any cost or making any profit because thats just bad beer karma all around. i might get 3 or 4. the owner does not want people going to his yard because of concerns of theft. the kegs are not in Ithaca, i am in Ithaca. Cheers.
I'd be more worried about sun than rain. Both because the rubber would deteriorate from the UV and, if they're not clean, the heat could accelerate bacterial growth and possibly corrosion. That being said, most can probably be cleaned up and used just fine.
i believe the snow season would cause the most damage. followed by the mud season. there is no such thing as a sun season in Upstate, so this is not much of a concern.
Definitely worth the extra $5 for it to be tested, I have a couple of kegs that won't seal due to the keg lip having a bend... But if your able to pull from the pile, if they have pressure, they are most likely fine.
CrossFit workouts for functional, fence-hopping strength and carrying endurance! For what it is worth, we snag Cornies on CraigsList around here in Minnesota for $30-40 no prob. But that stack is very impressive.
