Couldn't get an OG with my hydrometer

    hydrometers are fragile. I now keep several around, after breaking one (which was the only one I had, naturally). the plus side is that if one reads strangely I can just check it against another one.

    I've only noticed a difference when there is a significant amount of yeast in particular. I think the post above stating that you have a final gravity hydrometer is probably more accurate. And obviously, when it all settles out than that variable isn't relevant. I think Wicked Sluggy is correct that in most cases it is not a problem. I was just guessing and guessed wrong.
