An awesome local shop is putting in a PEGAS Counter Pressure filling system. While I know this is good news, I'm looking for someone to help point out the pros for us consumers? From what I understand, this will help save the store money because there is minimal beer waste as this system reduces the foamy explosion you sometimes get with a growler fill, but I think I remember some people discussing counter pressure growlers last longer unopened, and might even be suitable for waxing and aging growlers? Any insight and/or experience is helpful!
Sounds like you have it all right. Every taped and tightly closed CP growler I have opened has had great carbonation. I have 2 Super Kitty growlers I expect to age in their containers. If it saves the store money that is a bonus, it's great for the consumer!
The PEGAS system is amazing. It purges the vessel with CO2, fills via counter pressure, and then adds a CO2 topper. I had a 32oz flip top growler that I opened after 3 months and it was totally fine. It's a cost effective way to get factory packaging of growlers at a reasonable price. It also does not waste one drop of beer due to foaming. The only problem is that it requires a dedicated person to operate it during its entire procedure-which can take up to 3-4 minutes per 64oz growler. I've also heard the newer PEGAS systems have a small dispenser (tap) that will dispense straight beer into a glass etc. this would enable the user to pour a sample/glass of beer without having to fill up a vessel.
