Anybody open up one of these from Bruery and find it to basically be a sour instead of a nice dubbel?

Emailed Bruery about it to see if there were any other complaints but curious if anybody on here has experienced the same.

Always interesting to have it at the tasting room, pick up your allocations, then open one up the day after to find something entirely different.

I only picked up one, I'd try it tonight but I can't drink for another week due to the antibiotics I'm on.

Yeah I only ordered 2 originally and after trying it bought the other 2 to finish off my allocation limit. I can only hope this one bottle was a fluke and my other 3 should taste the way it should.

The cloudy pour I got originally set off some alarms but it smelled perfectly fine. Go to taste and wham! huge surprise, and not one I enjoyed. The beer found its way into the drain and was immediately replaced with a jamaican blue speedway.

The bottle I opened was just fine. Wasn't the best dubbel out there compared to some easily accessible Belgians, but it certainly didn't taste as though there were any off flavors to it that were unadvertised.

Can you describe "sour" in a bit more detail? Did it taste like one of the other infected beers they've released? Green apple? Vinegar? Something else?

I wouldn't say vinegar nor green apple. The best description I could think of would be a petrus oud bruin that sat out and opened for about a day.

Basically it lacked all sense of any additional flavor when compared to what I drank in the tasting room. I wish I had a better description of it.

Fortunately for me but unfortunately for this instance of comparison I never had one of the other infected beers.

Haven't opened mine yet, but this doesn't surprise me.

Wow, lovely. I'm pretty curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this, as much as the Bruery has lost the benefit of the doubt on reports of infections, I would be surprised and disappointed if they let another infected batch get past QC.

Shit... hoping this ends up being isolated (though sorry to the OP that you have to deal with that). Had been looking forward to picking mine up in a few weeks.

From what I am hearing from other friends they have not opened up anything like what I experienced. Oddly enough one of my sisters still liked it, of course when I poured her the speedway she cringed....so something is obviously not right with her. =P

I got 3 more bottles to test. The bottle that I opened that was bad was pulled from the shelf there in the tasting room if that makes a difference at all.

    Hello!

I apologize for the poor experience you had with your bottle of Couverteur. This is the first/only incident we've heard about the beer. Our lab analysis prior to release shows the beer to be completely stable with no traces of bacterial or wild yeast contamination. It sounds like this a random isolated incident, but we'll track and pass the info on to lab to be sure.

I see that you're already in communication with the Society desk. They'll be able to resolve the situation for you.

    Cheers,
    Matt Olesh

Yes, I will be providing the information they requested when I get home from the office today. I hope for everyone else it was isolated because it was a rather fine brew when I got it off tap.

The one I have opened so far was not contaminated. Not a great beer either, but definitely not infected

OP, your description almost sounds like Oude Tart to me...crazy theory (complete conjecture, and highly unlikely) but by some crazy circumstance, perhaps the wrong label got put on that bottle? Would be a mix up by the Bruery if that were the case too (but far better then another infection imho), but only the Bruery would know by the bottle code I think. I really hope this is not yet another infection issue, and just some wacky isolated incident. Sounds like it's being taken care of either way, so that's good.

Darker color pour than an Oude Tart plus the bottle itself still smelled of chocolate but only when beer was in it. Once beer was poured into the glass the scent disappeared. Once I emptied the bottle...scent also disappeared (which obviously as it should since there was no beer left, but I would have expected there to be some hints remaining).

It made Father's Day interesting though.

Bottle code on the way to Bruery in about an hour, longest work day...ever!

Edit: I also now need to watch V for Vendetta this evening...so thanks for that.

This beer tasted fine to me on draft, but glad I didn't buy any bottles.

Probably a leaky cap on that bottle.
