I've gone to craft bars a few times on way home from work or between errands, and each visit I only plan to have 1 beer (because of driving reasons), but end up having 2 anyway. Really the only reason I opt to have a 2nd beer is time in the pub as it just seems weird/rude to me to down a beer in 15-20 minutes at the bar, ask for check and walk out so quickly. And because of the driving reasons, I usually opt for <8% ABV brew to stay sober. Do the bartenders think anything weird about it and is it socially ok to just have a quick 1 beer and leave? Plus my wife doesn't like the fact I have 2 beers and then drive..even if they were Lambics or Berliner Weisses under 5%.

I think it's absolutely fine to have one beer. Perhaps nurse it a bit longer if you don't want to seem like you're chugging it and walking out?

I am not a bartender but I will go in and have a single beer if that is all I want or I am able to have at that time. I might tip a little better just because I feel like it, but I cannot imagine people having one drink and leaving is anything unusual for any bar, craft beer or otherwise.

I don't see anything wrong with ordering just the one beer. I've often handed over my card or some cash saying that I'm just having the one.

No, happens all the time. If you feel wierd, just pay cash then you can leave when you please.

Have one and have fun my man, no need to worry about 'image'.

Don't really see any issue with this unless you are sitting at a table and have a waiter. If you really want to minimize effort for your single beer, sit at the bar and pay cash instead of opening up a tab.

Its not the 1 beer thing, more about feeling weird leaving after only sitting in the bar stool for 15-20 minutes. A light beer even nursed can easily be downed in 15 minutes by most anyone. Just feel weird I guess. Having 1 DIPA or Imperial Stout over 45-60 minutes is normal but 5% beer I usually put down in 20 minutes.

There is nothing weird about that especially compared to other things you'll see in hospitality. It's pretty common.

    A) Is this really a question? Yes, you can just have one beer.
    B) As for driving, ask if they'll do a half pint on the second one. Used to be my MO at the Portsmouth Brewery all the time.

One and done. It generally takes me about 25 minutes and if the place is tough to get stools at, I may even have it standing, as not to tie up a stool. But even the, if you aren't just tying up a stool for an hour on one beer, nobody should have an issue with it.

Then order the Imperial Stout and drink it over an hour rather than drinking two 5% beers in 30 mins. Sure your wife would prefer that too

Craft Beer Bars and brewpubs are the same as bars -- that I am aware of at least. It's not as if there's an unstated social compact between you and the entire Craft Beer Movement. One and Done and yer good to go. I suppose if it makes you feel better, you could just ask for a pint of water after the first pint, and then tip as if you had enjoyed a second pint (I often do exactly this, but mostly because I'm a generous tipper.)

Why is it weird? It is you who are doing them a favor by stopping in at all to enjoy a beer. They should be grateful whether you stop in and have 1 or have 10 (not saying they aren't, but that's how you should look at it). If you get pulled over for a DUI/DWAI, will they be paying your bills?

Yeah man I think you're overthinking it. These bartenders see so many people throughout the day, I doubt they really care whether you had 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or whatever beers. They probably don't even remember 15 minutes after you left. But like someone suggested, just pay cash for your beer. That way you won't have to ask for the bill after just one beer.

Not trying to make you feel weird, but when I was a bartender at a decent pizza place, I did think it was a little odd when someone came in and just had one. Not really sure why, though; it didn't bother me or anything...I guess I just thought if I were taking the time to go out to an establishment, I would plan on staying a little longer, that's all. But if it's just grabbing a beer on your way home, that makes sense.

What did strike me as weird, though, was when someone would come in, order a shot (and it was always something more expensive, usually Patron or Grand Marnier or something like that), slam it, pay, watch T.V. for a minute or two, then leave. That happened probably once a month, usually around 5 p.m. When I mentioned how I thought it was weird to a co-worker, he said maybe they're just on their way home and stopping at each bar for a shot. Maybe. Just struck me as strange, though.

This wasn't a craft beer bar; really not a good beer selection either. Not sure if that makes a difference.

The other day I went into Kroger for a gallon of milk. But on my way out, the manager gave me a shifty stare. So I went back in and got some chocolate milk and 1/2 and 1/2 too.

Not weird, I've gone in for just one beer plenty of times, especially when local breweries hold special 'Pint Nights' and you get to take home the glass as a souvenir. I usually tip a bit more when just ordering a single, just seems like the right thing to do.

He probably just stopped in to see if there were any hot girls to hit on. None to his liking so he slammed a shot and walked out.

No reason to feel weird. A bar is a place of business that supplies their customers with a place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. Thats like saying you feel the need to buy a shopping cart full of food when going to a grocery store instead of the 3 or 4 items you wanted. id feel more weird that it takes 40 minutes to drink one beer (regardless of style) honeslty lol. Not to be rude.
