If its a slow night at the bar, they will be happy that you stopped by and gave them one more sale. They make money selling beer, so they will be happy that you bought one. And on those slow nights, that extra couple bucks you tip will be that much more appreciated.

iPhones have those ginchy, new-fangled "Tip Calculators" built into 'em. I never use mine (because my fingers are too big and clumsy) but I always figure that rounding-up to the nearest % in my head works, and 20% is still pretty much considered generous for a $5 Libbey "pint" 'round here in Flyoverland.

to be fair, I don't tip either when I'm back home in the UK, but in the States you do have to - seems the bartenders get paid relatively worse. doesn't mean I won't hold some/all of it back when it's totally undeserved

people taking the concept of tipping too hot damned far. I think a $1 tip on a $5 is good considering all they are doing is pouring you a beer at most (or popping the cap off of a bottle&handing you a beer). I mean how much do bartenders really think they're entitled to for their serviceon said $5 beer? $5? $10?? $20???

Too many people feel entitled to stuff that they don't earn/deserve.

Sorry, but I'm not tipping you anything for putting that slice of pizza onto a paper plate

When I was a bartender at a college macro beer bar I didn't think it was weird at all during the day. Students and non students would stop in during the week for a quick beer and take off. If a group of 21 year old guys came in on FAC and left right away I was concerned.

I don't tend bar now but when I was stateside going in for one craft beer, especially >6%, it was one and done. I did not feel uncomfortable doing it and the bartenders understood. They would rather see me 4 times a week vs drinking 3+ and getting a DUI.
