As @Reidrover mentions above, in the NW forum we discuss Bum IPAs. Our rough parameters are high ABV (8+%), large format (at least 16oz), and cheap ($5max). I see many of our domicile-challenged brethren walk out of 711 with 19.2oz of IPA instead of Steel Reserve these days.

And, judging by the number of airplane bottles of Fireball I see in the Rite-Aid parking in the mornings, it must be a preferred pairing.

I am really hoping (fingers crossed) that all craft brewers trend to begin to sell their canned beer to-go or to retail stores (even 16oz) individually at same price per oz as they do in packaged 4 packs and 6 packs like these Stovepipes seem to be priced at. Would really provide a lot more flexibility for consumers individual buying habits and ulitimately probably boost sales overall.

A tall Voodoo Ranger and a Fireball shot is a delicacy I’ve long preached the effectiveness of. When you’re parched after a long day in the sun (or the rain and snow), there are few things that hit the spot better. Feel free to alternate a Skrewball and Coors Banquet or an All Day IPA and a Jack Daniels Honey.

Victory has changed the bottle/can art for Dirt Wolf and added 19.2 oz cans to its format:

    Available year-round in 12oz 6pk bottles, 12oz 12pk Cans, 19.2oz Cans and draft.

I wonder how this format will be priced.

Recently when grocery shopping at my local Wegmans I did take the time to look at the BIG can beer refrigerator. From memory the Voodoo Ranger series of beers were priced around 3 bucks and I saw other craft beers priced around $3.50.

    Cheers!

You just sent the Not Good shivers up my spine. Neither the Voodoo Ranger or Fireball holda y interest for me.

I’d be happy with a stovepipe of Dirtwolf. Wonder what the price point is going to be for those can 12 packs as well

I found Two Hearted for the first time ever about two weeks ago. I enjoyed all 19.2 ounces. I saw a tweet the other day announcing that Swami's will be available in stovepipe. I like having more single options as few retailers not named Trader Joe's or Total Wine sell singles around here.

The problem with stove pipes is that a regular coozie only covers about half the can. I guess you just have to drink them fast. On the other hand, the tall format is convenient for holding between your legs on a bumpy dirt road.

Drink the first half fast. Then pray the coozie keeps the rest cold.!

I sort of think $5 is too much.. but inflation.

I don't mind the stovepipe format for reasonable strength beers.

I do not like it for big beers. The BA Ten Fidy in stove pipes for example. Price point is roughly similar to a bomber, without the benefit of being able to recap the bomber. So you're committed to that large volume of high ABV beer. Fortunately, this trend seems to have been short-lived.

I can see them sticking around long term. Craft and crafty breweries will continue to permanently replace a chunk of the macro market as the U.S. beer's modern traditions continue to hold their ground.

I was buying these pretty often from the grocery store the last year of so, prices were $2 - 2.50 for Modern Times / Lagunitas / Stone so definitely cheaper per ounce than buying in packs and they were always relatively fresh.
Prices are up a little recently but still cheaper than in packs, but freshness seems to have dropped off a lot. So I’m wondering if some of the changes/issues that Stone and MT have been working through are impacting their distribution of these cans (at least to larger grocery chains like I usually grab them at).

I will grab 2/$3 at the grocery store for the evening when in there-usually 90 Minute or Jai Alai. Once left a brew pub in disgust at their lousy service-sat at bar for 15 minutes and wasn't even acknowledged-and grabbed one at the gas station cause wanted a beer-perfect! I find it funny the comments about driving with one, anything in moderation. I wonder what folks think about the 8.5 ounce cans I am seeing for some higher abv brews? A four pack at $18 comes to like $9 a pint.....

Is it strange to anyone else that some of these brewers are putting their hi-octane brews in stovepipe cans at a lower price per ounce? First off, I just think of the dangers of the border line encouragement for overindulgence. That’s Secondly, it doesn’t seem like a lucrative concept from a business perspective. If ppl are smart about it, it encourages them to buy the larger format at a lower cost while causing that consumer to ignore the more expensive 4/6 pack, likely at room temp, getting older and less appealing to everyone.

My assumption is that it's a marketing angle, as they may not make as much from these but a new customer will try it and like it and then buy a six pack next (or explore their other beers). For me with some beers it has been having the opposite effect, as I will try it and won't be interested in another purchase (but still a win for them, as I wouldn't have bought it at all otherwise).

But I do have to admit that these cans sure aren't helping with alcohol abuse in my area. I have seen some sad things recently and this may become an issue at some point.

Would definitely pick up stove pipe craft frequently at those prices. AALs are the only ones priced at that low rate these days here.

Here are the prices at Woodman’s, the Wisconsin and outside of Cook County Illinois grocer with the lowest liquor margins for 19.2-40 oz single serving beers. Stovepipes are about the same in price versus 4-16 or 6-12 packs of the same beer at regular pricing.
