A lot of my friends just consider it premium beer and often lump all of it into the same category as Guinness, Stella, etc. They don't really have anything against it or demean it, it's often just something that they would rather not spend their hard-earned money on.

Funny--more and more people I run into are drinking less and less macro--even some of my hardcore bud and miller lite friends are branching out into some of the less hoppy/easier offerings like Sam Adams and some of the local craft ambers and hefes. Most of them refer to it initially as "fancy beer" but heck, even my father now--a Hamms and Falstaff guy remotely-- is enjoying what he calls "good beer" now.

My family and friends usually say,(and I am sure we have all heard/dealt with this) "If you want something special you best bring your own." Which I typically do anyway if I know all that's there is BMC beers or none at all.
I also get, "You drink that weird shit."
After taking a sip: "Blech! How do you drink that? What is in that?" Me: "Ummm. Flavor."

It doesn't really bother me, it just strikes me as a pretentious/douchey word to use, unless you are mocking yourself. Anyway, it has derailed the thread enough, there isn't much more to it. I just would never turn down the offer of someone buying me a beer, no matter what it is.

Back on track, another misnomer is that everything is an IPA if it's craft.

Oh wait, looking at all the labels of beers coming out, apparently everything is an IPA. Carry on.

Maybe you need to have a beer?

Personally I preferred "microbrew" before it became "craft beer".

Yeah, I get an "Ugh, how do you drink that?!" from a lot of girls who insist on trying my beers which are usually IPAs when we are out somewhere. haha... I love watching it happen. Every now and then you'll get the girl who actually likes it, or sometimes the girl who says "that's pretty good" while grimacing. haha

Look man, the word doesn't bother me, but if someone told me they were a connoisseur of anything, I would immediately think that person is a narcissistic douchebag. It's just how it is, and I was trying to help you out by suggesting you don't do this to yourself, as I'm quite certain that anyone you have said this to in the past thought to themselves, 'what a douchebag'. I'm trying to be an advocate by doing my part to make our community look a little less snobby to those unfamiliar with our beer culture. It just seems so high-falutin' (did I spell that right?). It just comes off like you're too good for 'regular' beer. That's all - you can keep calling yourself that, doesn't bother me one bit - but you got so damn defensive, that's what got on my nerves - and that's what tells me that you ARE one of those types who goes around calling himself a connoisseur just to make others feel a little inferior, a little ashamed of the beer they drink because it's not good enough for you.
