Ok fellow beer historians.... Anyone know a "true fact based" example where a reputable craft beer recipe was created on accident or by a mistake and....... It was a winner and continued to be brewed at least on an annual basis?

I'm not aware of any craft beer recipes which were created on top of an accident so to speak.

Not an accident, but I heard from a Lagunitas rep that Little Sumpin' was created by Tony as a joke and now it's their best-selling beer.

St. Arnold Boiler Room. It was a botched batch of Lawnmower that they experimented with and developed into a berliner. They tweaked the final recipe a bit, but it was all the result of a botched batch of beer.

Isn't that the whole thing with Deschutes' Green Monster?

Arrogant Bastard was a messed up Stone Pale Ale batch.

I believe that Pliny the Elder is based on a beer that Vinnie Cilurzo made by accident when he was brewing at Blind Pig (he added double the hops by mistake, or something like that, but liked the result).

Green monster was a badd batch that Deschutes decided to sour.

Odell's Shenanigans was initially the result of a mistake that became a Cellar Reserve release from them.

In my beer travels, I have heard from more than one reputable brewer: "Brew the beer first, then assign it the to a style it fits the most." The only difference between screwing around and consistent batches is writing it down folks! ; )

It isn't national. A local brewery got a mislabeled batch of yeast that was supposed to go into an Irish Red. It was Belgian yeast. The mistake caused Irish Twin to be born. I have a fresh growler in my fridge and have had many glasses. I hope they make this tasty mistake for many years to come The brewery is Confluence and they make tasty beers.
