Why are the cans so defiant? Is it lack of Vitamin D or something? :astonished:

Did you have to pry the shards out of the cooked carcass?

I remember back in the 70's there was a commercial that only now I realize was from the glass industry. It featured sportscaster Chris Shenkle saying "The great taste of beer. It comes in a bottle."

That said, I love canned craft, and keep a steady supply of canned Sculpin now.

They put out a nice poster with just about every* existing US brewery represented by at least one of its beers.

    * I think only Yuengling and Eastern Brewing Corp. bottles are missing.

Cans are cheaper to manufacture etc plus they are better for the beer as no light can get to it

i can agree for the creation of new ones...but the "environmentally friendly" portion of the comment was mostly in reference to the lower overall transportation costs (both of new beer and of the compressed used cans en route to recycling) and the relative ease of recycling aluminum generally as it tends to use less energy to create new cans than with glass recycling. also glass tends to have a lower "overall" recycled content than cans percentage wise.

either way, both have some pros and cons in certain aspects and hopefully the infrastructure will continue to increase for effective recycling.

When i first started getting into craft I definitely stayed away from cans just based on the majority of mass produced, shitty beer coming in them. I honestly dont remember my first craft can but i know it was a blond ale and it definitely changed my opinion of them. For the most part they arent really that much cheaper than bottles out here.
I've yet to come across a can of darker beer - the cans i see are always pales, ambers and other light beers. I def tend to go for darker beers so I havent had enough canned crafts to notice flavor differences in cans vs bottles.
And cans throw off the feng-shui of my bottle collection that decorates my apartment:wink:

Is the thing i mentioned about dark beers in cans true? Has anyone else noticed that there are less of them? there a reason for that?

I stopped by my favorite "pick your one 6 pack" place and ended up leaving with a bunch of cans by pure coincidence. Ended up with some great beers, Resin, 3 Beans, Larry, Gubna, and Ten Fiddy. Color me happy.

I've also been fortunate to get my fair share of Heady Topper this summer, so me likey cans.

I'm on the lookout for some Old Chub.

Dude I know what's up with that? That's so f***ing irritating because it's one of my favorites.

Beer in a can = drink at the lake, while golfing, fishing, hunting, safer to have in the garage/outside near pavement when doing work on the car or in the yard, etc etc etc

Personally I'd buy everything in a can if I could. And I don't think it has ANY effect on the taste, if anything it tastes better in a can.

The issue with light is spot on. But "cheaper" is not that simple. They are certainly cheaper to ship and easier to store, but they require a far greater capital investment to start or higher volume for contract brewing. So all those brewers who have perfected their bottled beer will quickly find out that it needs a lot of fiddling to get it in the can. That's hidden cost. On the other hand, the costlier shipping becomes, the more breweries will switch to cans.
