Craft brew bottle shop, opening one. . .

    Beer. I'd like to be able to put food on my table, but I'm not expecting to get rich or even live a luxurious lifestyle. I've always enjoyed a retail environment. I've been working in the corporate world for 15 years now and want a change. Since I was a kid I've wanted to own my own buinsess. I believe I live in a city and in an area where there is an opportunity to own a successful shop. I'm willing to put in the hours and work and go for a while without making a profit.

    There are several bottleshop owners/managers/employees that post regularly in the NW forum. Try another thread over there and I'm sure they'd be happy to answer some questions.

    I was typing a really awesome, heartfelt response and then I accidentally closed my browser.

    I will say this, make sure that you're 100% into the craft beer, especially if you're willing to open a true craft beer shop that doesn't sell BMC products. Also, be prepared for the dipshits coming in looking for 30 racks of Natty Ice. And make sure you don't get disappointed if you have customers and associates that may not be as into craft beer as you are.

    Lastly, keep in mind that most small businesses fail due to poor planning. As a management student, my advice is to thoroughly plan all aspects, pros and cons of opening your own business.

    Thanks. I graduated from the business school at my college and I'm really try to do it the right way. I have a good grasp of what its like to deal with the public and customer from past retail experience. I want to take a couple years to plan this and pick up some part time work at a local shop. I've been into craft beer for 15 years and have dabbled a little in brewing. It is definitely a risk, but one I want to take. Wine is my weak point and most all bottle shops are beer and wine. I need to further educate myself on both topics, although I'm fairly confident on the beer knowledge, but there is always more to learn

    Yup. It's under the regional header.

    And my two cents on selling BMC stuff. There is a very successful bottle shop in my town, and I know of several others, that don't sell the mainstream stuff. I say why not sell it? It's good cash flow, and somebody is going to sell those beers to those customers,why shouldn't you be the one to make that profit? Again, I see both sides, and I don't think there's a right or wrong way to go. Your decision.

    If you're opening a liquor store then I would definitely suggest knowing all you can about wine and other liquors. Also if you're being general as far as selling products, then I would suggest selling BMC products because it's easy money. I also have a retail background. Like I said, if you're 100% into doing this then definitely do it. It is definitely a risk, especially if you have a good job. At the end of the day, it's what will make you happy and if you feel that selling beer and wine to customers will make you happy then go right ahead and start planning for it.

    Also, as you said, you're going to take a couple years to plan this so you have time to educate yourself on the nuances of wine and beer.
