Oh boy, starting that drinking out of the can controversy (again). Haven’t you been following the Heady Topper (video) thread!?!

    Cheers!

My semi-educated palate - The same reason I struggle with pricing between "mainstream" craft beer and whales. I just don't have the ability to enjoy the $15.99 bomber of beer more than a $10 - $12 four to six pack. However, you miss the main difference for the pricing differences between craft beer and macro beer, namely the economies of scale. To make a long story shorter, even if the exact same ingredients are in each beer, the price per bottle to produce a macro beer is lower than the price per bottle to produce a craft beer for numerous reasons that I don't have the time or desire to expand on.

Modelo is delicious .. Im the same though I spend my money on big IPAs or other stonger style beers. Lagers I cant be bothered to spend 10+ on .. Everything else I drink is my awesome home brew.

Yes!! Let's berate this guy with snobby moronic comments that do nothing to help answer his question or offer alternatives.

I used to feel the same way. Most of the lighter flavored lagers tasted like Adjunct Lagers to me. It's tough to pick out nuances with a semi educated palate. It's possible you aren't a fan of lagers you've had, or are a fan of Tecate. Both are great, just find what you like. Keep drinking and you'll notice more subtleties come to the forefront even in beers you had previously thought tasted similar or the same.

So for a lager to be great, its gotta taste like an ale? Hoponius Union is as much a perfect lager as Celebrator is a perfect porter.

Yeah, it has this odd cult following. I think every other beer NG brews is better, though. That said, you sort of have to try it at least once because of the status it holds.

    Craft Pilsener > Craft Lager.

And, yes I know they are both brewed with a lager yeast.

“The company's (New Glarus) best selling brand is Spotted Cow …”
Wisconsin is not that different from much of the US (or the world for that matter). The vast majority of beer drinkers prefer lighter tasting (low-moderate flavored) beers.

    Cheers!

i'd say try some SN stuff. shame stoudts doesn't make it to california (i don't think). their gold lager is excellent.

just try other craft lagers / pilsners. if you really end up not liking them more than tecate or corona or something, buy tecate or corona. or if you're just dead set against supporting BMC and such, keep buying the craft.

not the biggest conundrum i've ever encountered(:.

This is like saying "Craft IPA > Craft Ale."

    What is a craft lager?

Shift has some noticeable Nelson Sauvin hops...not Tecate-like at all.

Light bulb: The OP should try Anchor California Lager!

I have tried this beer since it is a California only product but Anchor makes tasty and reasonably priced craft beer in general. A twofer!!

    Cheers!

no, what you said really doesn't make sense. "craft lager" doesn't denote anything at all with the kind of specificity of "craft pilsner" (and of course the latter is an example of the former).

are you trying to say, like, craft versions of american adjunct lagers or "light lagers" or whatever? when you say "craft lager" to a beer person they think you mean like prima pils, or a doppelbock, or any number of things. when you say it to a non-beer person, they have no idea what you mean.

in other words, i think you're confused.

It appears you simply don't like the style enough to pay for a premium version. Nothing wrong with that. I'm not big on pale lagers either.

Craft lagers taste like beer. BMC lagers taste like beer-flavored water:grinning:

I'm being serious: when you say craft lager, what do you mean? Helles? Maerzen? Bock? Doppelbock? Rauchbier?

What's a plain lager? For many, the word "lager" calls to mind the light lagers of BMC, but in the craft beer industry I feel you see too much diversity to just say "craft lager."
