Here is an early 1900s report on Mexican brewing:

"Around 1888 a Bavarian brewmaster, formerly from Weihenstephan, brewed the first lager beer. Until then American, German and Danish beers, and until the time of the Kaiser Porter and Ale from England, had been imported. Nowadays in Mexico about 300000 hl is produced. The importation is steadily decreasing. The main consumers of the mainly 12-15 degree beers, which are mostly sold in bottles, is made up of, apart from affluent Mexicans, the resident foreigners, of which only the highly influential French have not yet completely converted to the barley and rice juice.

These beers taste better to the European than the American beers, since, apart from small amounts of hops imported from North America, mainly German and Bohemian hops are used. Together with toll-free German hops American malt is used. Apart from the barley rice plays a role, corn is hardly considered.

The breweries are mainly lead by German-American brewmasters, some come directly from Europe."

12-15% og, American, German and Bohemian hops, American malt and rice. Depending on the kind of malt used you could fit either Bohemian type pale lager, Vienna type lager beers and Bavarian type lager beers within those specs, which I'm sure they did.

Modelo claims that the recipes for both Corona and Modelo Especial were developed in the '20s by German brewmaster Adoph Schmedtje. Of course, before Mexico, Adolph lived in St. Louis, MO...

Patrik, what exactly does "first lager beer" mean here? Does it mean the first German style lager beer?

This is in contradiction to the reports that Santiago Graf from Austria brewed Vienna Lagers in Mexico in the 'earlier' 1800s.

    Cheers!

Actually, they took him out back and lined him against a wall where he was shot. The Revolutionaries didn't kill the Austrian brewers though which shows a remarkable clarity of thought.

You either have no filter, or no respect for Mexicans who use this site.

Hear, hear! That, and when I first saw the title of this thread I though they were referring to craft beers from Mexico, which are apparently good.

I take it to mean the first bottom fermented lager beer, and it does contradict other articles such as the one found in 100 years of brewing where it says that Santiago Graf brought the first lager beer to market in 1885-1886.

    I'm Mexican...

But you may be right about the filter.

I am intrigued by OB Beerito though...just hope the QPR is there.

When I'm having certain Mexican lagers, I often wonder to myself: "Do the denizens of Mexico realize how lucky they are to have "macro" beer like this?"

I saw this one recently and was intrigued, but ended up passing on it. I may have to give it a try next time I come across it.
