All this talk about sanitizing growlers, not using soap, being careful how they are stored and dried is practically a commercial for the new Crafty Cartons. I've seen articles and ads for them but have yet to see them out in any beer bars. They sound like a great idea. Been used in the UK for years. Has anyone tried these? Does anyone know of any bars in the NYC/NJ area (or anywhere for that matter) using these?

Seems pretty cool, just too small IMO, 2 pints. If it was larger I think it would catch on.

Seems thats part of the appeal to me as if you want a growler equivalent, you can take 2 of them home. And the thought of maybe taking 32oz of an IPA and 32oz of a Stout to finish with is even more appealing. I own a few growlers (all 64oz.) and don't end up filling them much since I cant' drink the whole thing myself in one night.

Florida has this stoooooopid law that you can only fill 32oz and gallon growlers. I have a gal of Jai Alai in my fridge. Gonna put a dent in it in about an hour.

Does anyone think that these will be able to hold the carbonation as well as a growler does?

I don't see how they can if they're not airtight.

    amateur! :stuck_out_tongue:

One of the beer stores I go to mentioned he would be getting the cartons but still also fill glass growlers.
I have both 32 and 64oz glass growlers and a 16oz swing top bottle that all my regular stores will fill for me.
I wonder about freshness in the container, do you have to drink the beer right away or could it be unopened and saved for the following day?

I don't really see the need. Glass growlers aren't that hard to clean, they can store beer longer than most give them credit for, and they last virtually forever.

The need is that anyone can take out beer and you don't have to own a growler to do so as these are disposable and would be provided by the bars or growler fill stations. Still, some of the points raised above are valid so not sure about how quickly the beer would need to be consumed. I would hope they would have thought out a way to seal them so no air gets in to protect the carbonation (maybe with a spout like the orange juice and some milk containers have). Will definately try it if I see it anywhere near me.

well the need would come from a 1 gallon growler of CCB Florida Cracker Belgian white breaking in the back of my truck 2 weeks ago. The stink has finally gone away.

I believe these started in the U.K. and most of their beers have very little carbonation anyway.

There's a "old man's bar" near me that will sell a quart of tap beer to go - Yuengling, Bud, BL, Coors Light, Miller Lite or PBR for $4.50.

These dudes put it in a chinese soup container...
...you know you gotta drink these right away.
I'm guilty of going out for 1 or more quarts of Yuengling and/or Miller Lite at 11pm on a Sunday Night many times because I can walk or stumble over there without risking a DWI.
Put it in cardboard, plastic or glass, when I want a beer to go just give me my friggin beer!

In the US, cardboard containers have been used as growlers for draught-beer-to-go since before Prohibition. Originally round, wax coated cardboard with slip-over lids, the "milk carton" types and plastic of various designs (those noted by "JoeyBeerBelly", as well as "cubetainers") have also been used over the decades.

I'm sure that you remember the old-time 'buckets' of to-go beer. I recall my dad letting me have a sip of the fresh draft that he'd bring home once in a while. Draft beer in a KFC-type cardboard bucket with a paper lid....stop by the local bar on the way home from work, have a draft, take a bucket home, and it had to be consumed that evening. No shelf life like a growler, etc. Maybe they're still around in your area.

I do remember "a bucket of beer" and yes I had sips of my dad's Rheingold, Knickerbocker and Ballantine from those 'fresh draft' buckets.

Edit: I was born in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, 1958) and lived there until I was 9 before moving to Long Island in 1967.
My dad was Brooklyn born and raised and loved the hometown (and NJ brewed Ballantine) beers.

I remember when i was in college bringing in empty 2 gallon plastic milk or water containers and certain gas station/convenience stores would fill them with whatever they had on tap. This was back in the early 80's in Florida. Not sure if it was even legal but it was cold draft beer so we were happy.

A bar in PA used to sell draft to go in plastic milk gallon jugs. Not sure if it was legal or not.

I saw an ad for these in the new Celebrator and my first thought was "these won't be legal in California." Seems like a cool idea for when you want a beer, but not necessarily a growler of it. Although it sounds like you'd have to drink it pretty quick, since it's not sealed like a growler.

Just came across this FAQ on the cartons. Seems it is meant to be consumed within 3 hours of purchase and will leak if turned on its side so some of the concerns raised above are 100% correct. I would think it could find a niche in promoting take out beer, but the growler market has nothing to worry about.

I like it for the idea that they’re promoting in their FAQ (the FAQ really should be a main top-level link) – if you want to drink more of that brewery's beer tonight but don’t want to risk getting a DUI, and without having to deal with a growler. At that price, a brewery could just charge a buck or two, fill it up, and you’re set for the night. It’s in addition to growlers, not a replacement.
