So I managed to swing a six pack of Sixpoint Resin, living in a small east TX town this is a big deal for me! However, I noticed on the bottom of the can, it has the date September 2015 printed. Now, I'm not familiar with Sixpoint, so maybe this is something they do...but, does this imply they expect their IPA to be fresh for potentially 5 or more months...? I realize the ABV is high, but the general consensus on IPA time frame that I have seen is as unrealistic as 2 day to as forgiving as 1 month or so. 5, potentially more seems bizarre. Thoughts?

About average best by date for an IPA. I wouldn't recommend keeping it that long though, drink it up as soon as possible. Keep it cold, it'll last longer.

A lot of breweries claim the shelf life of their IPAs to be around 6 months, so this doesn't surprise me.

I have seen best by dates as long as 10 months on high ABV, substantially malted IPAs. Brewery recommended shelf life is typically between 4 and 6 months on the vast majority of IPAs. This is just a shelf life. Some will stand up well for 6 months, and some will begin to fade after a month. However, the rule of thumb to live by will always be the fresher, the better.

Not surprising in the slightest. Also, the beer is probably quite tasty at five months old.

I'd love to see the percentage of BAs that could tell the difference between Resin at 4 months old and Resin at 5 months old. I'm guessing it'd be like 2%.

I still see plenty of breweries putting down 2 years or so for IPA’s. I have seen things like 5 years.

I am drinking a Wheat DIPA right now that says BBF 20 Jan. 2017.

That's not surprising at all. I'd be more impressed if the people who question the breweries about these things could taste the difference in a blind vertical taste test of these beers in question if one were given to them. If it's stored properly, and the seams are within spec. I'm highly doubtful.

Waiting for the freshness ****s to come in and say it's only good for 14 days after brewing...

I don't think they're making a statement about freshness. Just that if you drink it within 6 months then they guarantee it won't kill you

You're getting mixed up with hi-res. Resin is 13.5 days

If I remember correctly, the Best By date on Resin is 9 months after being canned. I could be wrong tho..

U already held it upside down, releasing the yeast sediment. It's no good. Lol.

I agree, I'm not an IPA freshness ****.

But... the local TW had 10 month old West Coast IPAs so I grabbed one and found a 3 week old one and did a side by side with friends. The difference was huge... I know that's a big age difference, but where's that line of demarcation?

Not sure about u guys, but the more tropical fruity iPas seem to fade into a bitterness after a while in my experience, where the already bitter, less fruity ones seem hard to tell. I had a 6 month old Torpedo a few months back and was ready for anything and it tasted great like the first one I ever had. I have also had enjoy by after by about a week and again about a month later and the month tastes alot less complex. Still amazing if it was the first one I ever had, but there was a flavor dissipation.

Like anything with beer and life. IT DEPENDS. There's plenty of hops out there which brewers use that handle time fine, just as there are plenty out there in use that do not hence Stone and its enjoy by series. Also too, what are the chances of a 10 month old beer to have been stored improperly? Much higher than one that's 3 weeks old. That's for sure.

My two cents: Yesterday I bought a case of 21st Amendment Back in Black for $15 that was discounted because it was out date (best before 3-22-2015). I was initially unsure whether I wanted it even at that price because I'm not a big fan of black IPAs generally and was not impressed with BIB the one previous time I drank it. Plus, OLD IPA!! Well I took the risk (lol), bought it and it tastes much better than I remember.

I also bought a case of five day old Southern Tier 2xONE that does not taste as good as I remember it being last year, though it is different recipe. As of right now I would say I actually like the BIB more than 2xONE. My opinion, of course, is subject to change.

Like dude above me said, IT DEPENDS.

I drank a can a few days ago dated May 2015 and I got it sometime in September. It wasn't quite a malt bomb but a lot of the hop aroma had disappeared. I have another dated Aug 2015 that I'll open soon.

I couldn't tell the difference between my 1 month and 4 month old Resins recently. With this hop profile and in the canned format, so long as kept refrigerated these don't "drop off" like some other IPA's.

@Sixpoint maybe someone from the brewery can assist.
