Hello. I'm new to BA. Joined because it was recommended by someone I met while out checking out some new breweries. Several other types of forums I frequent have threads or sections for new member introductions and its always cool to be able to welcome new members say hello etc. Maybe somthing that could be implemented here at BA ... unless you have already got that and I completely spaced and missed it.

Just a thought. Anyhow glad to be here and look forward to talking beer.

    Erik

Well, there is the Beer 101 section: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/ , but it's kinda hidden. I agree that putting a "Welcome to BA" section, with FAQ's, policies, etc. in a more prominent place is a good idea.

    I love this idea.

Another follow up forum would be the "Ask a basic question" sort of forum. I see that elsewhere and it is popular because it isolates all of the new folks' basic questions and it lets the helper-minded BA's have a forum they can cuddle with.

Love the idea as well - just somewhere for new folks to check in rather than diving into the fray with some weird, inane thread or having to ask a basic question halfway into a thread. I think some of the threads that annoy people are just attempts to say "here I am...new guy" - no real way for people to do that. Most other discussion boards I have been on from bikes to tractors has something similar.

I think another nice addition would be an acronym list - maybe that already exists in Beer 101? It took me a while to figure out what the hell a Beer Advocate (BA) Stout was....just sayin'... You can figure them out eventually and I suppose it might be part of the fun.

    Not sure if serious?

Edit: I think the newbie forum is a great idea.

Or you could do what you did and just start a thread sayin you're new, welcome Erik ! Cheers !

I wonder how many of the "hundreds of new users per day" also decide to use the forum, because if it's any significant number, then an intro thread/forum might be a bit hard to keep track of.

I like the current system of heckling and harassment until you leave or get the idea of whats up, but that's just me.

Yeah, I have no idea what in the hell BIF, GIF, LIF, HIF, etc mean, outside it having something to do with group beer trading.

I also love this idea. One of the reasons I lurked as long as I did before actually posting on the forums was because I felt like an outsider, and I'm not all that out-going of a person (until you get to know me). I think a Welcome to BA would be a great addition, and it might encourage some folks to jump in and join the chat, too.

Welcome! I've only gotten active in the forums this year after stalking since 2011. This might help:

In case you're not being sarcastic, see above list.

I, too like the idea of an intro thread. Sometimes posting a new thread just to say "I'm a NOOB" seems a little daunting. So I found this thread to say HI! I'm a noob, but love beer!
