Don't worry about being overwhelmed or anything like that. You have many many years to learn and enjoy beer. It sounds like you are young so you may have 50, 60, 70 years. Think of it like that...

Yep, you hit the nail on the head. At the ripe age of 25 lol I'm excited to get into beer, it's a whole new world to explore.

    Hey guys,

Last time I was in Liquour outlet in Boonton I spoke with one of the employees about what I've tried, what I thought was decent etc.

He suggested to try some farmhouse ales and tripels. So I grabbed Victory Golden Monkey and Victory Helios (he showed me a Southern Tier Grand Arbor) but I'm hesitant to drop $8 on anything for now until I build a palate.

The Golden Monkey was pretty solid with some nice spices coming through but still didn't blow me away. Helios seems to be another decent beer but probably won't re-buy.

My friend brought over some Guiness and Killians when he crashed at my place the other night, and I know these are macros but the Killians actually had a nice caramel malt flavor to it. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good beer with caramel and malt flavors? That is going to be my new focus.

A process I've always thought would be great for a newbie:

    1. Start with Sierra Nevada - they make a wide range of good examples of fairly basic styles. Drink one of everything they make.
    2. Pick your favorite style from Sierra Nevada's lineup. Drink that style from every brewery you can find that makes it.
    3. Pick your favorite brewer of that style. Repeat this process with them (drinking all their beers) and try to pick a different style.

The 312 might have been "off" for you because you picked up the brand new 312 Pale ale and not the 312 Urban Wheat which you would have been used to.

Awesome, I'll give it a shot!

I really like this idea, going to give it a shot.

Added to the list! Thanks Mike

Ah that makes sense LOL Newb move.

I tried a Rogue Dead Guy Ale last night, was hoping for the caramel and malt flavors to come through a little more. Seemed a little bland to me to be honest, not sure why. Had higher hopes, but to be frank, the Killian's Irish Red Ale I had almost had a more noticeable flavor.

    The journey continues!

On a side note, I tried a chocolate wine last night and it was unreal. 14% alcohol, had the fiance acting silly real quick !
