Well consider this, the bottles were at $12.00, so (x2) and 10 bottle releases that's $240 of last years membership. +$50 +$28 (8% tax) and considering the rest is the same (glasses, shirt, tacker) add the extra $78 to $240 and divide by 20.

That's nearly $15.90 for a 375ml of beer, or $31 for a 750ml equivalent. That's more than The Bruery and Cascade.... and people complain The Bruery is expensive (although their membership may even be worse $wise..)

But it's worth it right? I know that didn't answer your question, this was just math on the beer included in membership. If the bottles remain $12.00 than I guess you can make a case that the extra $ up front is worth the rights to buy more.

That's good to know I've been wanting to it try it for so long that I'd be kicking myself if I missed out on a chance to buy it.

A 26% price increase from last year does seem a bit drastic. I imagine the extra allocation prices will go up accordingly, and will probably cost around $15/bottle before discount (if I had to guess). But no one seems as outraged about this price hike as the Le Terroir debacle.

I think both increases happened because they (New Belgium and CS) have realized what price the market can bear, not because of the increasing cost of producing sour/wild beers. It's a sound business decision, but I just hope the trend doesn't continue indefinitely. Otherwise I'll start placing orders from Etre for my sour fix because it will be cheaper.

What makes you think allocations will go up? They are adding memberships. So unless they make more of the specialty beers then allocations will actually go down.

Yeah, sorry. That wasn't clear. I imagine allocation prices will go up, but quantities available will probably go down. Fixed the post to make it less confusing.

Keep in mind my math was speculation, I was just doing the math for the $$ of the beer included in the membership, again CS might just add this upfront cost to the membership and keep the price per bottle at $12 ($10.20 for members).... we'll see.

I'm just a mindless consumer with a taste for sour and funk. I don't think about the cash, just the boxes and boxes of expertly crafted beer. Take my money, Chad, just take it all.

I guess I just need to find a job where I make more money. Because ultimately as prices go up, it means the LESS AND LESS boxes of beer I can afford and LESS sour beer to drink :slight_frown: First world problems.

complain about the money now, or complain about not getting any of the beer later? i think; per prospero's math, that the price per ounce is definitely approaching the threshold where people may begin backing out.

however, im not much of a trader and considering the special releases and events that you have to line up for to get trade bait for these vs. the ease of scoring a box full of them all at once, the membership is still worth it if you want the beer. i want the beer.

the lowest allotted extra purchase this year was l'brett d'blackberry, at 3 per member at initial purchase and then 3 more when the allocation was made available again, and im not even sure this one went up for that second round of sales or not. i hope that 2014 is the same in that none of the extra allocations are as low as 3 more per member and stay in the 4-6 more per member range. i wish they would state what the price on these will be this year.

I think you're thinking of L'Brett d'Plum. There was plenty of L'Brett d'Blackberry to go around.

I looked back through my purchases and I/we didn't pay taxes last year.

Either way, I didn't think twice about re-joining this year. I think CS is consistently putting out better beers than a lot of breweries out there. Look at J. Wakefield, which was $300 for 6 bombers, or Rare Barrel, which is $300 bucks and very few people have tried their beer, or (gasp) Upland, which is $250 for no beer.

Also consider this: The CS sours on the shelf in stores are typically $13. That's about $28 for a 750 with tax. So an extra 10% to have exclusive access to some of the best beers in the U.S.? And to have them stored for me, and I can pick up at my convenience? And pre-sales for events like WTF? And merchandise? And taproom discounts?

Needless to say, I'm not excited about the price increase. But the value is there for me, without a doubt.

Around town, I guess. $12.99 for the sours (and just the regular ones, at that). Where are you seeing them significantly cheaper than that?

Find another liquor store. St Bretta, Hop Savant, Vielle, and Surette are all $6.49-$7.99 at every liquor store around south county - Lukas, Davidsons, etc

I'm planning on signing up, but $350+tax is the absolute maximum I'll pay for this unless they offer something drastically different going forward. I simply cannot justify a $400+ price tag (assuming the price increases continues). Bring it on for 2014, but I'm scared I may have to take out a second mortgage to continue in 2015.
