Picked up a 32oz Crowler from Village Idiot Brewing in Mount Holly, NJ. Anyone know of any other places in NJ/Philly area that have crowlers? I really love the idea of 32oz cans that you dont have to drink right away. Are stores that have growler stations allowed to also do crowlers? thanks!
I think they'd be allowed to just more so having to buy the machine. Not sure how common they are at this point. But like you said its way more convenient than having to plan on drinking the beer ASAP. Hopefully this catches on.
The Hulmeville Inn recently purchased a crowler machine. I haven't got one from them yet, but I did pick up a few while out in Ohio at Willoughy Brewing and I like the concept.
Not sure why you think this is any better than a 32oz glass growler? I actually think a glass growler would be better because they can overfill it and easily cap on the foam lessening the O2 exposure. The crowler system at VI doesnt have any sort of CO2 purge as far as I'm aware and exposes lots of beer to O2 so not really sure why you think it's better.
Know what? After I read some more information about crowlers I realized that they never did a CO2 purge and I started to wonder how long I should wait to drink it. Thanks for bringing it up! This article mentions CO2 purging the cans. http://blogs.westword.com/cafesocie..._to_other_breweries_for_canned_beer_to_go.php "The cans are filled with beer and then purged of oxygen by inserting a Co2 tube down to the bottom. Then the metal lid is attached to the can with the table-top seamer. The entire process takes just a few seconds."
Only place relatively in the vicinity of Philly that I know of that has a crawler machine is Pizza Boy (and it isn't that close to philly). They just got one.
Weird that the CO2 isn't added first since it's denser than air and would remain on the bottom of the can and rise to the top with the fill. Oh well it's good to know that some sort of CO2 purge is used during the fill.
