So, I just moved into a new house with a basement. Since we have had a really warm winter my basement temp has ranged from 56 to 61. Basically this has given me an idea of how warm the basement will get in the spring with possibly warmer in the summer. My question is would I be better off getting a fridge down there or is this temp range ok for cellaring items for up to two years? Just heard some varying things regarding a fridge drying out seals and corks over the long term. Any help appreciated.

i''l take a crack at this... From what I have read you want to have the least amount of temperature fluctuation as possible. So during the year if the temp changes 5 or 10 degrees that should be fine. Generally speaking the higher the temp the quicker the beer could age (if that makes sense). And the colder the beer is the longer it will last just like a regular refrigerator preserves food. For the next two years you should be fine and even if you want to utilize your set up longer it should not harm the beer at all. I'm curious though what happens in two years.

My cellar is my basement and it probably has a yearly temp between low 60s to high 60s. Its not the perfect temp but it works for me and I've seen good results. Honestly i would prefer your basement over mine cause its a tad cooler. So i don't think at all you need a fridge. Make sure all the bottles are not in direct sun light too.

    cheers!
